guitar lacquer

Just tried my canned polyutherene on a piece of waste wood, will post results and pixs soon. (probably in 2 days). From what i see now, its bubble free, althought surface isnt really smooth, will do some fine sanding when it dried. If it works, it defintly got to be much more easily than spraying laquer, at least for me.

talking abt fabric finishes, i once saw at WMUM store a Fender telecaster in tweed finish! i think it was a signature model. happening stuff...

but i think it's extremely difficult to apply a fabric finish to the whole body without creases.

if you're spraying the regular spray can paint, make sure its not too thick.

as it ages, you'll have tons of hairline cracking.

even if it is not too thick, you'll see hairline cracking albeit to a lesser degree.

My DIY spray painted guitar bodies all have fine hairline cracks now after 3-4 years.

Anyway, the colron brand wood dye and their danish oil works very well.

I've yet to try their Polyurethane floor finish but I'll expect it to work well for matte satin finishes.

curious - where do you get your polyutherene?

ever considered Nitrocellulose gloss finish ? they are used on a lot of old guitars. people claim that it makes the wood 'sing' better.

only thing is, I heard it got banned cos the people working at fender suffered from lung cancer due to inhaling too much nitro.

but if you can get your hands on it, why not =)? wear a mask just in case though hahaha.

it is still done, just not in the masses. thats why you see those nitro finish guitar bodies on Ebay costing a bomb.

another thing that I've read is that nitro decays your wood so that sounds travels through more freely. well correct me if I'm wrong though.

well, some people would do anything to improve their tone even if its gonna cost a few hundred bucks. its not as if they are the ones who would die of lung cancer  .

just one thing I would like to ask, what is the purpose of coating nitro on the neck?

Nitro is not banned, just limited in usage on guitar manufacturing due to health concerns.

Again, same story - if you're so into tone, get an unfinished body. I never heard of the nitro decay thing but suffice to say an unfinished body will, all other things equal, resonate better than a finished poly/whatever body. Maybe not against the nitro one.

But nothing's all else equals. And before jumping into the tone bandwagon, please do proper stuff like wiring properly, setting a guitar up, getting good cables and a good amp.
