GST bump to 7%

for a country small like singapore, we can't do anything other than saving for the rainy day. by making the country rich, we will be able to stay on par with bigger countries.

How rainy should it ge and how often should this rain occur before one starts to buy an umbrella?

A rich country with poor people who are not taken care of is truly a poor country.

i think temasek has been making profit. isn't this what we want?
Temasek's profits include those from the monopolies that abound in Singapore. We pay tariffs on water. We pay even increasing transport fares even when there is no rationales to do so. It is also a known fact that Temasek has failed miserably in investments in Suzhou, Global Crossings, Micropolis, Chartered Semiconductor, Shin Corp, Optus and numerous other oveseas ventures.

Without the mopoloies and the exorbitant fees for the companies wholly or partially linked to Temasek, Temasek's performance will be rather startling.

we dont need to spend more than other countries. is there a competition?

It is not a case or a matter of spending more or even less. It is about spending what is deemed right. We learn from other countries as we learn from other people. If other countries can reach developed status with a certain pattern of expenditure and its people are taken care off then it is truly a worthwhile venture to look into.

There is a difference between spending on people who need it versus spending $400,000 to rename Marine Bay, Marina Bay. Or spending billions on frivolous purchases of, at times, shady and/or shaky overseas companies.

maybe RoRK would like to contribute some funds to SOFT? coz I dont want to 'tax the poor to help the poor".

RoRK is also poor. Rork only has a MiM Strat, an Ovation Custom and a UX2. When RoRK gets his vintage Strat, LesPaul and a few Martins, a Kork Tritorn, a cool studio with an engineer on standby 24/7 then RoRK will help James to provide all the services he wants to have for Soft-ies.

Such is the way things are, friend. Nothing is ever perfect.

This is off course true. But to live in glass towers and pretend that everything is alright when it is not; is not a perfect way to achieve rationality.

In theory, the process is flawed. In reality it has proven to be flawed. There amy be cases where theory is all theory but there are instances where theory is succinct, clear, understood, and is repeatable under actual conditions.

Which brings me back to my point. Do you have a better approach for them to adopt?

The people at the top can only see faces below them, the people below can only see assholes above them.

For the record...

1. Singapore has not lost a single defamation suit against journalists or opposition or socialists.

2. The suggestion of indepth investigation into certain contradicting issues (especially when certain trade deals involved officials) are ALWAYS seen as "outside forces interfering into domestic politics".

3. Singapore has drop a further 6 places to 146th position in international press freedom.

4. The law changes that has been proposed also includes statements published via websites and blogs. (So be careful with how you phrase your thoughts. I thought they emphasized so much these are not mainstream media? Why are they "suddenly" so interested in it now? I leave that for you to figure it out.)

5. The best way to let "THEM" know is through the votes.

6. Personally, I am already accepting the facts that nothing is going to change or help until international (and nuetral) agencies step in to review (and investigate if necessary) the entire system going on here. Question is, is Singapore ready for this?

Again I say, some people are idiots, but if those idiots do a good job, why the hell not?

It's like how my dad has a sales rep in china who comes into the office four days a week, spends two hours in the office and goes off, and never misses his weekly golf game (on Fridays, mind you). Does it matter? No. He conistently maintains his place as the top salesperson month after month. He gets the job done.

Idealism is great, but always remember to ground yourself with the fact that it never works out the way it's intended to. The ideal can never be the best, cos like I mentioned earlier, we are human, and humans are flawed, whether you like it or not. Even if by some form of divine intervention you're able to achieve a state of total perfection, I hate to burst your bubble, but someone else hasn't, and that someone else is going to come along and @#$% it up for you.

Cheers.

Correct. But the point is ... do we want idiots? Answer is no.

It's like how my dad has a sales rep in china who comes into the office four days a week, spends two hours in the office and goes off, and never misses his weekly golf game (on Fridays, mind you). Does it matter? No. He conistently maintains his place as the top salesperson month after month. He gets the job done.

And in stark comparison, your dad says yes. Does the sales rep corner your dad into making decisions or by performance?

DD

RoRK, i dont know man. this is why i think being the government is difficult. citizens can complain non-stop but when ask them for money, suddenly everyone say they are poor.

do you feel that there are no avenue for people to turn to when they need help? if you personally know of anyone who needs help, let me know. i can put them in touch with the relavent organisation.

there's an article in today's st on temasek. check it out.

once again, i hope RoRK can lead by example and contribute to SOFT operational cost.

Thank you for this sweeping generalisation. Your dad should ensure that all os his sales staff do the same. Then he will only have ALL TOP SALESMEN EVERY MONTH.

I encourage you to visit those in SIngapore that live in one-room HDB houses and see how they live on a day-to-day basis.

What have you, your father, or the salesman got to do with them and your sweeping generalisation?

there's an article in today's st on temasek. check it out.

ST is known as one of the world's most blatant exponent of propaganda exposure to its own citizens. ST is ranked 148th by a very dignified press organization - that has nothing do to, specifically with Singapore - just in case you're curious.

If you want to know about Singapore, you have to read more thatn what the local media paints for you. I give you this as a start and an end -

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Sg_Review/messages/2680?xm=1&m=e&l=1

I would also like to let everyone know that Singaporeans were never like the apathetic sort that we are today, as a group, when it comes to social and political issues. There was a time, about 40-50 years back and perhaps even beyond that, when we were fighting for our sense of identity as a legitimate, independent country. And even thereafter, albeit shortly, when we became independent, politics and social issues were integral to the lives of ALL Singaopreans.

Something happened in the last 40+ years to distill, wash out, and rinse all of these thoughts, feelings and motivations. One only has to look at Maslow's theory on Human Motivation, look around at what Singapore has to offer in terms of politicians and social activists to understand why we are so FCUKTYPE today. And if you, per chance, were to look at the top of Maslow's hieracrhy (you should really start from the bottom) you will see that creativity is there - way up there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs

And please, stop asking me to donate. If you want, I can sponsor one of my non-harddisk products - http:///www.broadcastGEMs.com

I actually sponsor a number of events/activities here and overseas with my products as prizes but my products are for video post production. Why not ask local artises to sponsor their CD as prizes. Get a few of them to sponsor one CD each. I'm referring to the "love song competition"

Again, I reemphasize my point, I don't condone what they do. What I'm saying is, perhaps you would care to take the initiative, and offer us a more plausible alternative?

If I appreciate anyone (not neccesarily admire, thank you very much, I value my life), it would be our dear friend Dr CSJ. He believes in something, and he's willing to take action, albeit in a really daft way. Theory theory theory, it's easy to talk when you're an armchair critic.

The kind of stuff we get fed by the press is annoying, but what's even more annoying are the cowboys who go on and on about how the government is screwing them from behind. We get it already. We've heard it a million times, in every imagineable way.To put it crudely, what we need are solutions, ideas, not more people to bitch about it.

And for your information RoRk, I have an uncle who is VERY dear to me in that predicament. I am fully aware of what he goes through, and I do not need to take that from you. I understand that you have very strong sentiments against the government, but if you expect this to remain a civil discussion, I suggest you keep your temper in check. Good day sir.

Oh yes and to bro DD, it's true, we don't need idiots, but tell me, could you just name me two people who could do a better job? It's not ideal, but it works, for now. And regarding the sales rep, it doesn't matter. If he decides to be cheeky, out he goes. Not like my father will have to answer to anyone above him, if you get what I mean.

I am not against the government. Rather I am against a group of people who blatantly deny the very people who have voted them into public office a decent and fair livelihood.

Do not for one second indulge in the utterly false thought that a political party is the government. The government is much larger than a political party as it includes the entire civil service and all its branches into society.

I have already given you an alternative from the word and go and at this instance you continue to ask me for an alternative??? Take heed that we ar eon the subject of the GST

I'm sorry, but from your words, I have seen absolutely nothing that points to a solution. All I have seen are complaints. We are sheeps in the flock. We are brainwashed. We are all political morons, and we should all take heed to your viewpoint because it's the only one that counts. If I had seen one in the first place, I wouldn't even have bothered to comment.

Again, I bid you, good day Sir.

Bro Agingyouth: SHOW ME SHOW ME! *waves hands around frantically*

mm.. all i know is that bringing girls out on dates will cost more, guitars should be bought online from overseas regardless of the hike and any speculation or complaints right now won't directly affect the outcome of the GST hike.

am i correct to say that all of you who plan on "spending less" since there's a 2% increase, that this will affect the overall outcome of the GST hike negatively if practiced on a wide scale? the same way that human attitude towards depression leads to a deeper depression in economic status of the country? just wondering.. i didn't take economics, but i thought the average educated person would be able to figure that out by now.
