Hi.. i'm new to this forum as well as this instrument, just started learning not long ago and i was wondering what kind of grips are there? Cos my teacher didnt really teach me and i just hold it with my thumb on the 'topside' of the stick and the rest of my fingers wrapped around the 'btm side' stick. Can anyone please enlighten me on the different grips and stuff? thanks alot! :)

hey man, hows it going. who are u learning from now? my feeling on this is that grips shld be taught and cleared up on the first lesson so no bad habits emerge. different teachers do things differently though.
it might be wise to maybe either ask your teacher about correct grip tech, and if you feel unsatisfied with his best explanation you might have a lesson with another teacher or possibly take lessons from someone else.
its hard to explain wat must be done, someone who knows his stuff showing you and making sure u execute it probably will be beyond wat anyone can tell u from a paragraph.
some web sites have videos and pictures, thts the next best option if money and time is a problem.
hopes this helps, let me know how it turns out man

Actually he did teach me if u consider this as teaching- i had to

purchase this book and this book had 2 pictures and he said that i could

use either and im really not sure whether my grip is correct or not as the pictures

werent that clear..

i just hold it

with my thumb 'upper' the stick and the rest of my fingers wrapped around

the stick on the 'under' side, well he didnt correct me ( i dont think he even

saw anyway) so i just carried on with that ..

Oh and i dont noe if its nice to reveal where im learning frm..

My advice is to quit learn from this "teacher". If he can't even ensure that you are holding the sticks correctly, then I don't think you can learn much from him.

Go to vicfirth.com and look for videos by Dom Famularo. He demonstrates the different grips very clearly.

Cheers....

hey bro. come say out wheree you learning from? haha.. dun worry your name is safe under tt nick of yours

go ask alvin i've seen his grip, his match is gd. trad if u wanna find out check out uncle louis he can show u the dynamics.

Grip is an important Techniques which there are many (we don't need to use all), but whichever is most comfortable to us....but it has to be correct.

The most common - match grip will be expidited different in different circumstances say....(1) Playing Rudiments, (2) Accenting & Ghosting, (3) Riding a Cymbal (4) Accenting on Hi-hats etc....it does incorporate certain right techniques for all these - with the ultimate aim of getting the - RIGHT SOUND - which will be Dynamical & Musical.

It is best to have an Instructor help you with this. Grip sound simple, but not so as it seems - a good instructor will be able to tell, if that grip was correct. I am also a Student Drummer and would you believe me - after 6 months of playing - my instructor is still correcting my grip (which is a technique) at times depending on what I am asked to do....Now, it has become habitual for me..and I'm improving...

I love my Instructor

I agree, I think they are most important to a Student Development especially in the developmental stage of drumming.

You should asked your Instructor if you're doing it correctly, a good one will automatically tells you that you are doing it wrongly (eyeing for details) and from his ears. If your grip is wrong, it sound differently.

Much of techniques in grip is to allow you to play dynamically with Proper Stick Control. Eg..you need to control the rebound of your Grip when doing a stroke on a snare - and the sound has to be consistent (both Left & Right Sticking to sound similar in volume - these is where your control of the Grip comes in(Sticks shouldn't be rebouncing here and there but on the same spot of the snare or flying left or right or hitting each other...just an example - It all boils down to Grip & Control and they are interrelated

The Instructor guildance is most important here due to his ecperiences, not the book (which is neccesary too).

My ex drummer instructor neber teach me the details in correct gripping/wrist-work etc....eventually it became my bad habit...Luckily my current instructor corrected me...but as you know (Old Habits Die Hard)....so it took me 6 months to really correct it finally.

Cheers !
