Global Warming - Or Is It Really?

i think that global warming is a myth. pollution is one thing, but it doesn't go very much further than that.

well that's just what i think

Overreaction or not, why not just make an effort to ensure that our children and their children have a better place to live in future?

And dudelove, did you quote the wrong person? HA!

hmm i think theres no harm in over-reacting.. what bothers me is that people are using global warming and climate change, the fear of armageddon, to make money. i mean the whole live earth and al-gore shit is just another means of making money and the sincerity to save the earth isn't there. they are just there to make more money.

i heard from my teacher that global warming could be due to the tilting of the world's axis which directs the north pole towards the sunlight thus causing the ice to melt...
soon we would be experiencing a few continuous days and then a few continuous nights when the word is tilted directly horizontal such that the north and south poles are at the current west and east poles...

global warming is natural..... dun try to stop it -_-

yes that will be happening whether now or in the future
its going to happen so be prepared for the worse

Pfft, global warming...

Go wiki global dimming. That's more fun.

We are living in a world where global dimming and global warming are playing us like a double edged sword.

no it doesnt. i think tim098 is trying to emphasise the overreaction of the ppl. not that global warming is a myth.

I'm glad there are people here who think in the generally same direction as me. Agree especially with attoegg's post.

Oh, about the axis' angle changing, I remember seeing a show on Discovery showing its like a cycle. It tilts at one angle over a period of time, before tilting back to the middle then in the opposite angle. I remember them using a spinning top as an analogy, which totally makes sense and completely explains global climate changes (ie global warming) and its cycle. And as long as this remains a cycle, I don't think we'd be experiencing continuous days or nights! Or so I hope at least.

My personal opinion with regards to global warming is that it is a symptom and not the root problem at hand here. Global warming is a by-product of various factors, and personally I think that our media tends to oversimplify the causes of this phenomenon as well as distort the risk we face from global warming. Nothing new there, the media does the same thing for nearly every other issue. It's just the nature of the mass media to sensationalize and amplify.

All things said, however, we have to recognize that our current way of living is a very real and present threat to our environment. While Earth Hour might be nothing more than a glorified marketing campaign, there is still much to be said for the benefits for what it advocates. I agree with the poster who said that Earth Hour is selling awareness: even though very often environmental campaigns such as these are used as vehicles for corporations to engage in public relations exercises, if more people are educated about environmental issues through such campaigns then it will have done its part, will it not? Even if you don't agree with the stands the campaign is arguing from, at least you'll be compelled to study the issues at hand in more depth, like tim098 over here.

It is true that celebrities, companies and politicians alike are often all too eager to hop onto the nearest sloganeering bandwagon in order to boost their own egos and reputations. That said, I don't believe that hypocrisy is an excuse for apathy. Even if a celebrity is only furthering his or her own interests by publicizing a certain cause, if you are genuinely sincere about ethical issues like this then the actions of somebody else shouldn't bother you. Yeah, corporations are making money and profit out of making "environmental-friendly" products. So what? If you're concerned about the environment just do your part anyway.

It is my belief that everybody needs a healthy dose of skepticism in order not to become just another brick in the wall. There's a very substantial difference, however, between being a skeptic and a cynic. In the end, cynicism is only self-defeating.

Two cents worth y'all. Peace. Apologies if what I typed was incoherent and grammatically incorrect. I'm getting through the day with no sleep and 2 cans of coffee. Cheers.

its the awareness the campaign is trying to sell, not so much of immediate effect....

+1
awareness is the main objective there.
of coz no one can expect immediate improvement, even if the whole world switched off the light for one whole freaking week.
they are just trying to inject the sense of responsibility into everyone's mind.
go green.

global warming is natural..... dun try to stop it -_-

dun try to stop it, but dun accelerate it

Basically the title says it all. Is global warming the whole huge hoo-hah it has been made out to be? I personally think not.

Go read up on it, you might find out things you never knew. There is nothing unnatural about 'global warming' and us turning off our lights for one hour isn't going to do SHIT about anything. It is in fact the biggest collaboration of idiocy I could have ever imagined.

The Earth changes with time. From hot to cold to hot to cold, it's an endless cycle. What the media portrays as 'Global Warming' isn't entirely true.

well seriously dude...ok if u think im juz making irresponsible comment which is wad im about to say i apologize 1st...but really if u ask me if all this Global Warming SHIT is true or not, honestly i would say who cares, even if its not true, ur not gonna convince ppl that it ain't true juz wif a simple post, well even if its true, yea who cares...if its true, the end of the world's comming we r all gonna die or whatsoever u cant change that fact right? so even if its comming i suggest we can all do one final end of the world gig n head down to paradise city since we cant avoid it rite?

Yoruka: Nothing to apologise for man, it's your own opinion.

You see while there are definitely people who think like you, there are also people who might just care to expand their knowledge about these kind of things.

I'm not some activist (or anti-activist:rolleyes:) but I am quite interested in this whole debacle and its mechanics, and I am sure there are other people who are as well, and that's why I even created this thread.

I probably won't be the one to convince people of anything but I might urge them to read up a little more, or pique their interest in this matter a little bit. That can't be anything bad.

Haha, Global warming...there is global dimming too. The dust in the air blocks out sunlight to sort of prevent too much light from getting it. That's man made, esp with airplanes and stuff.

Did you know there was a research done where they lowered 40% of air traffic in America once and the temperature rose by over 8 degrees the day after.

But if it continues, global dimming will possibly cause asthma and other respiratory problems because it is still air pollution. So Global warming or Global dimming? Bloody hell, it is like choosing between dying of aids or dying of cancer.

But I'm supporting Earth hour, although I can't live without electricity due to the lack of preparation. (:

Global warming is due to the drastic drop in pirates!
