Hi guys, i'm quite new to the local music scene. Just wondering, how many songs do you have to prepare for a gig?

How long will a normal gig be? 30 mins?

I believe theres the "set-up" time and everything. How many songs will be appropriate?

i think it would be good to check out some gigs first. nothing beats watching how it works.

yep James is right, it's a good idea to go to a few gigs and see how it all works.

a lot of it also depends on how you like to work the crowd. some bands go right into the music and don't talk too much in between songs. some bands like to work the crowd between songs, and if they're good at it and have a responsive crowd, it can work really well. if they're bad at it, it can backfire pretty badly on them. if you talk less you can play more.

it also depends on how long you take to set up. slow setup means impatient crowd and less songs to play.

That's why you have jamming (rehersal) studios. Not only can you play at giging volume (to yourself at least), you can also go through your routine and time yourself too.

30-45mins sets are quite standard for seasoned bands. Beginner bands could do with short sets like 15-20mins which include intro, 3 songs and minor talk cock (10-20sec) in between.

Remember to put yourself in the audience shoes, Don't wear their patience thin, if you know what is good for your band.

Stage presence is especially important as well.. Don't stand there the whole time staring at your guitar neck like a stone.. Try to move around and groove a little bit, makes the song that much catchier..

This might affect your stage time.. Because later people shout for you to get off.. :P
