Gibson SG

Hi guys,

this is my first time really GAS-ing ( new word i learnt here) for a guitar

Opinions people! which Gibson SG seems to be the best for belting the blues like clapton yet able to deal with heavier stuff? (not to the metal extent)

currently deciding on the Classic, which has 2 P90s; but its always best to hear from the seasoned first i guess!

The gibson SG classic is a fine instrument! I know, cause I have one. The p90s are really nice, with the right amount of gain, it can get a really nice chugga chugga sound. Although there's the single coil hum from it, but it's definately not your typical single coil. I'm sure this guitar would be able to handle anything you would need to play.

Gas inducing photo? you decide.

neck-ache inducing

I would say the Standard, or Classic.. Both would do quite well.. Both have retain a certain amount of fatness, and have a distinctive growl when driven.. But make sure you try the unit first.. When I was hunting for my Standard I tried around 5 different units.. All of them felt different, some mediocre, some not that bad, some excellent..

hey thanks! anyways, one important thing for me is the neck; i cannot deal with fat necks, any idea how the sg is like? neck wise? i dont mind the strat type necks and such.. is the SG a jumbo-fret neck?

the classic looks mighty fine. if i was to ever get an sg it would be the classic.

it's a real shame swee lee dosen't bring it in to singapore.

with regards to the neck, there are quite alot of complaints about the sg being neck heavy.

The Classic is meant for the US market only..
As for the necks, best thing is to check em out yourself lah.. I find the Standard has a more comfortable neck compared to a 61..

Its kinda hard to find the SG P90 to test as all i see are standards and 61 reissues! XD I just cannot stand necks that are too fat, difficult for me to do proper chordings

lol... if u searched for gibson classic in buy sell.... *cough cough* they can be bought in singapore.

buy the SG classic.

if u manage to find one on ishibashi, it should be around $1200 inclusive of shipping.

since gibson necks are all still hand finished, u may get unlucky and have one with a fat ass neck...all depends on the person finishing it...
but in general most SG necks are not fat.

and u mentioned clapton, i would guess the cream era and not the later puke-inducing era, so u already know wat u want right? p-90s ftw :P

they can do heavier stuff no problem also, metal also can.
heres a Gibson SG jr doing metal.

unless its a used one...

yeah bro..his is second hand..remember i told you about it??
lol...
bro...i still dream of the classic everynight leh..but now recession...
pocket money kanan cut...job dont pay as much also...sad nia...
one day man..one day...

thanks for the info guys! I'l still stalk ishibashi! haha, im jus damn afraid of the fat-ass neck.. wonder if its possible to change the neck without risking anything?

yup. slim tapered necks are thinner. well for my lp, i used to have a tapered neck. now i got a fatter one, not as fat as a 50s neck but its darn bloody comfortable. and screw those who say you can't shred with a fat neck.
imo, its harder to shread on a uber thin neck.

i see, thnks! funktastic u are a x japan fan? my dream guitar when i was 15 was the Love heart model, haha i guess my directions pretty much change now though i think they absolutely rock!

btw, the SG classic and the LP faded double has almost the same specs, albeit a different body shape. Beside playing comfort, any other major changes in tone or anything? I might settle for the LP double cut then if i fail to find the SG classic
