well i dont think its really fair to compare epiphone and gibson. you're trying to compare a 500 dollar guitar with a 5000 dollar guitar, u can't expect them to be of the same quality if the diff in price is 4500 bucks. epi's good for its price but of course compared to gibson, epi's materials and worksmanship may not be so good. i think even gibson's material cost costs more than a standard epi LP.

epiphone is to gibson like what squier is to fender.

basically epiphone and squier can use the shapes and sizes and features of gibsons and fender respectively, but it tends to be that epiphone and squier are marketed at the lower end/mid range market while the gibsons and fenders are marketed midrange/high end.

You are missing some significant fact that makes the Gibson/ Epiphone-Fender/Squier comparison you make wrong.

Fender has established manufacturing bases in Japan, Mexico as well as USA using the original Fender Logo.
You can buy Fenders assembled in USA with mex parts, or assembled in Mexico using USA parts depending on the model and year, also Fender japan released models such as the 57/62 reissue Strats with USA pickups. all of this was to remane competitve against the fast improvement of japanese imports such as Tokai and Ibanez etc. Problems started when the Fender sales started to drop as the Fender Brand was no longer a "USA" exclusive guitar, and there were various opinions about quality.
Squiers were introduced to try to revalue the Fender name and to capture an even lower budget group of players who liked the Fender range but could not even afford the Mex models.
Squiers have been made in japan, Korea, Indonesia China etc.
Gibson is, has and probably always will be ONLY made in USA with a l USA parts and premium manufacturing conditions.
Epiphone was a popular old USA brand basically out of production after some few models out of Japan saw the end of their competitve fight with the big boys. Gibson then bought Epiphone as a separate Brand to keep the Gibson Brand clean and premium. Epiphone was marketed in competition to Fenders lower cost manufacturing and Jap import rise.
Sorry to be so long a posting but the Branding issue is the distinguishing difference between Fender and Gibson strategy and market positions. .

Yes. But I'm cutting a long story short. :P

In any case I do feel the same for what Squier and Epiphone are doing... Simply using the Fender and Gibson product specs but using lower quality materials.

The case for Epiphone now is the same as it is for Squier. Operations have moved to China, they've stopped their contract with the old manufacturer for those still made in Korea and moved to a new one. If you want my honest opinion, current Epiphones... the QC is of lower quality than the older Korean ones.

(On an unrelated note, you can check out the old manufacturers' guitars. it's called Shine, and u can see them at http://www.luthierguitar.com . I'm not affliated with them.)

On the topic of quality, I suppose Gibson is making themselves as a premium brand, pricing at higher prices than ever, while Fender's pricing is slightly lower (well, also because of demand and supply issues.)

hahaha well its juZ tt everybody can afford gibsons and fenders at the pricing they are quoting.. haha.. aye.. its juz to expensive to get a fender or gibson unless your daddy is a rich man!!

haha. i own a prs n paid for it with 4 months of work at starhub. doesnt mean u need a rich daddy to haf a gd guitar. if ure willing to work. to spend less on expensive food. travel less. tt way u can afford probably any upper market guitar.

in any case , epiphone was actually a greek company . ( yes believe it or not) and it was involved in the telephone industry ( epiphone = epi being sound and phone being hearing)

it later left the trelco business and went into strings , from then on to guuitars after being bought by gibson

in any case , squier originally was the company tt made strings for percisionbass and teles and strats and broadcasters in the early 50s and 60s

ah.. gibsons... vs ibanez? I think both guitar rocks. I use an ibanez jem777 for more than 10 years, definitely fits some shredding good licks... also just accquired a gibson voodoo les paul.. fitted .10 strings.. ouch ohh yeah! Totally different feel and sound... that's what guitars are all about. Having a great difference in feel and tone.. dun really matter what brand or make. If you have some money to spare, get a better toned or feel guitar to ur perference, not per brand.

I am sure everyone here that speaks of gibsons, fenders, etc used to own some "shabby" guitars... I still have my RG350 korean made guitar with me, and started playing serious shredding with a samick. :)) My bro owns a fender and the clean tone drools.. so if i have marney, i will get all these great guitars to suit different playing styles.

keep playing bros
