hi there,

i sure would like to know how someone can get started on Jazz guitars.... i know jazz is a very WIDE genre... and as such i know its practically impossible to master every aspect of...

i was wondering whether its possible to actually learn jazz WITHOUT goin to a skool, (ed. berklee... etc) possibly starting from something which is easier to catch... and over time... work my way to more challenging pieces.

i would like to understand how Jazz works.... wat makes it tick... and how to refine the styles and techniques used alot in this genre.

anyone care to shine some light on this for me.. i guess it would be a gd read for our fellow softies too.

cheers,
khaos

well, what is it about jazz that appeals to you? jazz lends itself to many sub-genres, and pure jazz can be hard to appreciate if you don't have an ear for atonality. Good way to start would be to look up the early jazz greats like joe pass, django reinhardt, pat martino, and even people like al di meola and scott henderson. If its not really your type of music, then there's always smooth jazz, jazz fusion and jazz rock to go for.

Instead of asking what makes jazz tick, what makes YOU tick?

I started with learning just the jazz sounding chords first - provided you are already familiar with common chords. Then you can play around with the chords on simple songs from FAKE BOOKS, or just download some chord progressions or do the 12-bar blues thing in a jazzy way.

Start with the Jazz-Blues first.

Listen to players like Joe Pass --- he is basic in his approach, unlike jazz-fusion monsters of today. Watch his VIDEO INSTRUCTIONAL DVD if you can - those are great.

Well, that's how I got started.
