Fuzz pedal recommendation

helps if u can let us know what kind of sound you are going for... any band or bassist you have as a reference

ha ha.. no intention of selling the woolly mammoth guys. thought it would be better to know his budget before we start suggesting pedals like the Woolly Mammoth or B:Assmaster...

gosh everyone wants to sound like muse. 150 bucks and u'll get a EHX big muff pi USA.

go try as many pedals. we can give u tons of recommendations but its still up to u to decide what ur ears like. so just slowly go try them out and see what u like.

somehow, " to get the muse sound" is like what everyone is looking for.
muse is also lyk the benchmark for making fuzz pedals.
but tat's cause there's lyk no other permanant fuzz player that's famous enough.

u can try the MXR el grande lah.
shinobi is selling. ( i'm saving up to buy)
haha

Beside the El Grande, the only other pedals I could think of in that price range are :
- EHX Bass Big Muff
- Electronix Messdrive Hybrid
- Devi Ever Bass Fuzz

chris uses 2 russian muffs

but if you tried doing that you probably wouldnt get his sound. there's alot more to his sound than just his pedals. his rig makes alot of difference. especially nowadays

maybe u can pick out some words from the dubious words list to explain what you need : warm, hot, harsh, round, flat, vintage, modern
to me the muffs do a good job of getting the tone down but it does a poor job of cutting through the mix. the el grande makes a less versatile, more vintage (dubious word again) sound but it does a far better job of cutting through. you could also take the plunge for an electronix hybrid messdrive, it sounds like a really good pedal for the price.

(warning, entering boutique/custom territory)

if a muff sound is what you're after, the earthbound audio effects supercollider is the muff clone that i fancy the most. if you don't care for the muff tone but you just need something that will go down well for muse songs, i don't think you can go wrong with the woolly mammoth.

if you cant afford a zvex pedal then maybe you can go for one of devi ever's fuzzes. you shouldn't limit yourself to the devi ever bass fuzz, because the other devi ever fuzzes are very bass-friendly. you can find the clips of devi pedals on bass on youtube. to me the bass fuzz was intended for a more specific tone. at USD 99 for most of their pedals before shipping, it might just be within your budget.

of the pedals that i have actually tried, the sobbat bass drive breaker is something i like. it's just that much of japanese gear ceases to exist outside japan. but i wouldn't say it's the best pedal for doing muse-y stuff

i've been playing with my arger capricorn for almost a week and it is everything i hoped and expected it to be. i just need some more time to explore and experiment with the sounds i can get out of it. and to my ears i can almost NAIL the 'time is running out' and 'starlight' fuzz

what works for me is to model the kind of music i like, but rather than copying or imitating the sounds of those bands, i like to go for something that i think will fit the song best. so in the end it's about my interpretation of the music.

you'll have to go to youtube, the talkbass wiki or BASSFUZZ.COM and let your ears decide. it's not a substitute for trying out the pedal yourself, but when the latter is not viable, or you don't know where to begin, it's the best way.

i hope u have been sufficiently gas-ed

need help with bass overdrive..

i have these 2 pedals in mind.. they are the Boss ODB-3 and the Digitech Overdrive/Distortion.. Comparing these two.. which will be more recommended for genres from classic rock to hard rock, heavy metal to thrash metal..

ODB-3 link : http://www.bossus.com/gear/productdetails.php?ProductId=155
Digitech Overdrive/Distortion link : http://www.digitech.com/flash/BassDriverDemo.php

or what other recommendations are there? just wanting to compare so do not consider any budget..

Had the ODB-3 a while back. Absolutely hated it. If you're looking for an OD, it's probably not gonna cut it. Never tried the Digitech so I can't comment on it.

If you have the budget, you might want to look at other options like the HBE Hematoma, Fulltone Bassdrive, EHX English Muff'n, etc...
