chris uses 2 russian muffs
but if you tried doing that you probably wouldnt get his sound. there's alot more to his sound than just his pedals. his rig makes alot of difference. especially nowadays
maybe u can pick out some words from the dubious words list to explain what you need : warm, hot, harsh, round, flat, vintage, modern

to me the muffs do a good job of getting the tone down but it does a poor job of cutting through the mix. the el grande makes a less versatile, more vintage (dubious word again) sound but it does a far better job of cutting through. you could also take the plunge for an electronix hybrid messdrive, it sounds like a really good pedal for the price.
(warning, entering boutique/custom territory)
if a muff sound is what you're after, the earthbound audio effects supercollider is the muff clone that i fancy the most. if you don't care for the muff tone but you just need something that will go down well for muse songs, i don't think you can go wrong with the woolly mammoth.
if you cant afford a zvex pedal then maybe you can go for one of devi ever's fuzzes. you shouldn't limit yourself to the devi ever bass fuzz, because the other devi ever fuzzes are very bass-friendly. you can find the clips of devi pedals on bass on youtube. to me the bass fuzz was intended for a more specific tone. at USD 99 for most of their pedals before shipping, it might just be within your budget.
of the pedals that i have actually tried, the sobbat bass drive breaker is something i like. it's just that much of japanese gear ceases to exist outside japan. but i wouldn't say it's the best pedal for doing muse-y stuff
i've been playing with my arger capricorn for almost a week and it is everything i hoped and expected it to be. i just need some more time to explore and experiment with the sounds i can get out of it. and to my ears i can almost NAIL the 'time is running out' and 'starlight' fuzz
what works for me is to model the kind of music i like, but rather than copying or imitating the sounds of those bands, i like to go for something that i think will fit the song best. so in the end it's about my interpretation of the music.
you'll have to go to youtube, the talkbass wiki or
BASSFUZZ.COM and let your ears decide. it's not a substitute for trying out the pedal yourself, but when the latter is not viable, or you don't know where to begin, it's the best way.
i hope u have been sufficiently gas-ed
