Fret hand muting.

Hey, i have a question to ask those experienced bass players out there. How do you play the bass like the guy on the video. Note the bass player on the right. He seems to be strumming the bass, seems like his using his fretting hand to mute the other strings ad playing only one string. Is it possible? Any tips on how do it it or just playing in general would be greatly appreciated. Thx

thats wd all punk bassists do. pretend to strum but only play one string. haha

you just gotta cover the rest of your strings with the fingers on your left hand while u play the note. simple as that.

Lolz, really? Lolz, anyways i got another question, are you guys able to play notes in 16 beats with the alternate finger tech?? My fingers cant keep up with the Beats.

on which bpm? practice like hell and i believe you can nail it with no problemo dude, start slow first then increase the speed per stage

i practice, now i have a new problem, my middle finger is stronger than my index finger. it doesnt help that my middle finger is longer than my index finger by abit (overused maybe).

now unless the bassline is very fast, i will use the index. for 16th beats needless to say i will alternate lah. i am not a good pick player

but dont worry lah, if james "the hook" jamerson can be so enigmatic by using just his index, there is hope for us all :D

Lolz, ok thanks for the advice. Anyways is going to yamaha to learn bass guitar good? lolz sorry for all the questions haha, kinda new here.

shinobi: its all just up to practice. don;t think so much about it and it will be ok. just keep on playing. sooner or later u'll find yourself becoming a lot better than what you are now ;)

Zino: yamaha has a good reputation for teaching any musical instrument. it's just that they might talk a lot and not let you spend too much time on your instrumetn to practice. so thats where homework is important.

*not to sell myself here but i will be teaching bass at a music school soon. i hope to have a curriculum opposite of what yamaha has and have the student spend more time on the bass. i will be teaching beginner class. (i'm not the best bassist out there la heh.)

Oic, haha thx zero for the info. I hope to teach bass in the future also, hopefully i'll be able to acheive that after years of playing lolz.

Well, from what you said i think yamaha focuses on alot of theory. I think thats true as i learnt the piano from yamaha when i was young and yea. alot of hw to do haha.

Well sadly i stopped and lost all musical knowledge haha, kinda regret it anyways. Thx for the help guys.

..

all a matter of practice. there's tower of power bassist rocco prestia's instructional video on 16th notes. he plays them like a mutha, and he displays an incredible amount of control over his notes too.

Go youtube and search fingerstyle funk, and Rocco Prestia will be there.
He also perform in Bass day 98.
Stanley Clarke's School Day start with strumming of power chords. Check it out
Cheers

press what you wanna hear, mute what you don't wanna hear -)
then you can 'strum' your bass with your forearm if you wanted to

zero ! when you're teaching already inform me the price , place and stuffs etc ok. i might be interested to get my basics right. hahaha. i'm still a self-taught bassist , wishes to get the theory and all those crap right :D

pete wentz's tone is very thin, wirey, heavily compressed and almost inaudible in the mix.

so he can really play anything any way he wants to and chances are it won't really sound too bad with patrick stump covering up for him.

the battle between jumping around, spinning wildly and erratically hitting your strings against tone and dynamics is one that never ends.

unless you know exactly what you want and what you're willing to give up for it.

if you listen carefully, what sounds like the bass (running low notes) are actually being played by the other guitarist, while pete just whacks away at root notes in key.

i'm not saying it's a bad thing, the guy earns lots of fame and fortune for playing the way he does; and we could all learn a little from him. plus he writes great lyrics.
