Fret Buzz on D String

Hey guys, I'm looking for help..

I changed my set of strings on my SG recently (took out all the strings before putting up the new set of strings), using the same gauge (10's). Previously, I've been tolerating the buzz problem which I couldn't locate on the B string. Surprisingly, the buzz on the B string went away with the new set of strings but fret buzz on D string came.

The D string buzzes only when played open, and I'm quite sure that the string buzz because it got into contact with the 1st fret when picked. I've tried adjusting my bridge height (now its alot higher than my previous setup), but still, buzz could be heard when the string is picked hard enough. I hope that raising my bridge height further would not be the solution because currently it already feels like I'm playing my acoustic when I play my SG. :???:

Also, I thought of adjusting the trust rod to solve the problem and found out that my truss rod cover could not be removed after unscrewing the screws.

Thanks in advance, I hope someone can help me solve the problem even with low playing action. :p Cheers!

since it's a buzz at fret 1, somehow, an adjustment to the nut will seem to be more effective. perhaps the nut slots have worn away and etched deeper into the nut, thus causing fret buzz?

but nuts are very sensitive, best to find a pro to do the set-up and inspection.

Hmm.. I took a look at the nut and compared the slot for D string with the slot for A string, it doesn't really seem worn out to me.. Also, previously before I changed my strings, there was no such problem, I don't think putting up my new set of strings will make the slot worn out so quickly.

I took pictures of the nut slots, hope its clear enough.

If nothing could be done myself, guess I'll have to bring it to a pro. Thanks for your advice! :)

Hey, can anyone tell me where's the nearest place I can bring my guitar to for inspection? I'm staying at Hougang..

Anyone knows where I can bring my guitar for setting-up? Can I just go to any guitar shops like City Music or Guitar77?

Thanks for replying softies, but I think Standard Value is a little too far from where I am staying (Hougang).
I've email-ed Luthermusic, and that's what they replied:

Short term fix would be to raise the nut action or fill the string slot with bone dust as the slot would probably be worn out.

Actual fix would be to change the nut away.

Nut changing would cost $70.

Filling the nut slot would cost $10.

Is the price quoted reasonable? Sorry for my noob question, its my first time bringing my guitar for inspection haha.. I thought it was quite expensive, one nut $70.. :???:

Also, I saw on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/Graph-Tech-Tusq-Nut-PQ-5000-00-for-Fender-Slotted-NEW_W0QQitemZ300378982501QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar_Accessories?hash=item45effb8865, the nut only cost like $15..

the changing of nut usually requires

1) Removal of old nut

2) Cutting of slot on nut to accomodate the particlular gauge of strings in use(usually brand new pack)

3) Re setup of guitar with the particular strings, adjusting of action, intonation etc.

for $15, that is the raw material cost, not taking into shipping, guitar tech salary/manhour rate, effort and skill to cut the slot for new nut, change strings, resetup etc.

For the price quote, you are paying for the nut, service of guitar tech etc

As for location, you have no choice. All the guitar shops with quality work are round town area. If you wanna nearer, either find someone staying nearby who can do the thing or learn how to do it yourself.

IMHO, you should bring down the guitar to a reputable tech to let him assess the guitar. that way he could provide you with some professional advice with regards to which is the best way to deal with this problem.

I don't think a change of nut would be necessary but if you want a better quality nut, no one can fault you. sometimes buzzing might be due to your frets, the tightness of your neck or saddles.

trust the people who work at guitar stores. they are there for a good reason.

Uh, sorry if it seems i'm hijacking this... Just read through the posts, does Mike also do installation of Bigsby Tremolos? I don't wanna do it myself. Might kill the guitar. x:

this is not a SV thread btw.

There are other people who can do such repairs like guitar connection and Beez. Besides, mike is just a phone call away, don't be lazy.

anyway, just send it to a store and all your worries would be gone in exchange for a small fee.

IMO, $70 is pretty steep, no matter how good the service and repairs are.

heck, i only charge $25 to change my friends' nut to graphtech.

graphtech has some ready-made nuts made for gibson and epiphone LP and SG models.

go to Zen and look for KC. not really sure how much he charges though.

- open the guitar see if there are any broken wires. if there arnt any, your jack is spoilt. replacing one could cost your around $15?

- you could check the neck to see if it's warped. if it is, tighten or loosen the truss rod depending on whether the neck is overtightened or bowing. my guess is that it is overtightened. However, it could be that your action is too low.

- best is to send to a tech. we are just firing aimlessly. If you think that the repairs are too expensive, sell the guitar to a store and get something that is more reliable.
