Free marketing from media giants

we shouldn't get carried away with such marketing.... ANOMALIES

at any period of time, there's always some arses who have no talent at all, yet they can make it big. but between different periods of time, these people will eventually fade out and someone else will take over.

we should model and replicate artists who have long, sustainable careers and not give a shit about the rest. because not everyone can become an overnight sensation on the disney channel, sell millions of records of songs that suck, and then get arrested, go into rehab, or post nude photos or hardcore videos of themselves on the internet just as their career fizzles out

i will end of with a string of lame cliches:

what goes around, comes around
easy come, easy go
a rolling stone gathers no moss
an empty vessel makes the most noise
the bigger they are, the harder they fall
hit me baby one more time

well~basically. i feel sg still have lotsa catchin up to do musically and commercially. the market's small and everything. and majority of consumers prefers popish sounds. sure there are some decent music but very limited.i must say.

best method to get publicized and make quick buck. get signed on to a major label.

kai desu~

Actually that's not true and it a gross misconception amongst artists who die-die want to sign with a major label.

A lot of indie artists actually earn MORE than major label signings.
There is a price to fame.
When you sign to a major label, the label takes a huge cut from your earnings. In most cases, the company loans the artist the money to make music videos, promotions, etc, but the artist has to return that loan after the profits have been calculated.

Only the absolute cream of the crop manage to sell enough CDs and ticket sales to cover the costs involved, and by that I mean artists like Madonna, U2, Metallica, etc. These are the few who go on to make millions through a long career but there are more cases of a lot of major artists who don't get the cut they deserve.

In the end, whether you're on an indie label, major label or no label at all, the common denominator to success is a sustained hardworking approach to creating the product (By product, I mean both musically and promotions wise). The longer you take to claw your way to the top, the longer it takes you to come back down, usually.

I think the whole earning money thing is up to you lah

If you don't read contracts and just blindly sign you're gonna get ***ked.....Best way is to hire a lawyer to read you the terms of the contract and decide how they benefit you as the band/artist.

Not saying that labels are out to cheat bands/artist, but there are always shady business men and they may not deem it as cheating because they set the rules and you signed your life away.

So all in all its always best to understand the basics of the business and find a solution that best suits you. If the label doesn't compromise then maybe its time to approach other labels?
