Free gig with commission (looking for bands to work together)

Hi there bands!

I am suggesting whether bands agree in joining me in a weekly or monthly gig.
Its free for all the bands. Don't need to sell tix or pay entry fees.

But venue is a problem. It's hard to get free venue these days. That is why organisers need sponsors for space rental, equipments rentals, print of tickets, passes.
And the only way most of them could think of is to get bands to sell 20 tix or so..
I don't blame them. Cos i saw some organisers did great job by providing great tickets (for memories to fans), posters, band passes (for memories to bands), etc.
Meaning they make full use of the tickets sales for space rentals, equipment rentals, printing of tix, passes. Paying the crews for helping, giving commissions to bands selling more tix that the required number. And reward themselves with abit of profit for their hardwork.

Do you know of any organisers doing that?

Well what i plan is to have a gig at this small area first.. like jamming studios (which have cheaper rentals), eg : Chapter 6 Studios, Live Amp Studio, L-Cube, Odiocrib etc... Rather than Art House, Scape Lab, etc. Places like these need alot of budget which i don't thing most of us and young people can afford. I saw orginisers selling $10 to $12 a ticket for a gig at Art House. The rental must be really high. Thats why I was looking for equipment sponsors in my previous post.

So lets startthe gig at a studio, example Chapter 6.

  • 4 bands per Saturday.
  • Different genre each Saturday.
    • Alternatives
    • Hardcore
    • Metal
    • Old Schools
    • Punk Rock
    • Funk
    • J-Rock
    • Rock Kapak (Malay Rock)
    • etc (suggest me any other genres in the reply thread)
  • No selling of tics from bands but door ticket sales on gig day.
  • Tickets sales will be for paying the space rentals the rest (extras/profit) will be divided equally among 4 bands & organiser. (divided by 5)
  • So the more fans coming the more commission we'll get after paying the rental.
  • So bands have to play a part in bring the fans to their gig. And ofcos organiser will be doing that too.. =)
  • You never know if there are scout talents coming to watch bands perform.
So thats the rough idea of my plan. I realised young bands from secondary schools, ITEs, Polytechnics dont know their fans coming as they have to sell tickets. This idea is mainly for them too. If there are many bands have interest in this, maybe we can start mid-January 2011 & this will go on till we can get sponsors for equipments and even gig space. =)

Im open to suggestions but not unsourceful critics.
Sponsors out there! Hope you agree with this idea!! 0=)

Pros/cons on the sharing of revenue proposed: If there is a low turnout, bands/organisers may have to fork out money to pay for rental. This can work ofcourse if there is a high turnout or atleast high enough to have a profit - still you have a risk of bands paying - therefore, it will almost be the same as pay to play.

Another alternative, which LiveAMP studios did, is to share the spoils right in the middle. Half of proceeds go to the studio and the rest goes to the bands who participated. Using this as an example, there were about 50 people who came at $6 per entry for a 4 hour show. 50% of total revenue was not enough to shoulder the rental of studio but it does not matter as the bands did not shoulder this. In this approach, bands will never fork out money and will always get commission in money or in kind (jamming hours). The risk stays with the studio as if equipment spoil, bands will not bear the responsibility because it is the "studio's" event.

I hope you will be successful in your endeavor. I do suggest that you work with the studio owners to carve out a good deal for everyone. Those who genuinely want to help the local music scene will be able to help you. Good luck,

Pay to Organise

Thanx for the idea friend. =)

Well lets say i'm the organiser & i got a fair deal from a studio by just paying the space rent of normal jamming hrs. I think the tickets will be able to pay the rent.. For me, what matters are to pay the space rent. Getting commission in the profits are base on individuals like me, band members to bring and spread the event. So I think there should not be a problem for the bands as I will pay the remaining rental charge if the tickets sales did not meet the rental payment.

Do you think that answer the part where this is not pay to play but pay to organise?

=)

Ofcourse, if this is clear upfront then this would protect bands from paying upfront. Also, organisers who share the revenue with the bands equitably is good and more if they will not ask the bands to pay anything. This is just fair because in my view, it is the bands who bring in the people and entertain the crowd - no bands, no show.

One important thing to note though is that who would be liable if equipment get spoiled during the play. Will organiser still be shouldering this? In my view, it is the responsibility of the organiser to brief bands on do's and don'ts - if the band, despite warning, is still unruly they should be held accountable on damages. My point is, organisers do their part, bands must also do their part including making sure that their set is good.

Again, good luck (including finding a studio that will give you normal jam rates for gig) and more success.

if you enquire around, you'll find that some clubs offer a 50-50 profit sharing thing. if you come across the right one, then the minimum tickets to sell is 50 tickets at your own price. if lets say every gig you organise has about 6 to 8 bands, then each band only needa pull in about 5 to 10 people.

of course if this is not a pay to play gig then no fixed number of tickets to sell per band, but since this is a collaboration, each band should try to sell some tickets to defray their cost of performing, and best of all, the overal 50% profit made at the ned of the day can be split amongst the bands. if done right, in a gig with 5 bands, each band should recieve $50 at the end of the day if they sold 10 tickets priced at $10. since the coordinator is not an organiser per se as his band is performing, zero extra dollars goes to the organiser. ask around, of if you're really lazy, pm me and i'll tell you which club i'm refering to.
