Fractal Audio Axe-FX

Hey, just noticed the ad for this in the newest issue of Guitar World, wondering if anyone has had experience with it? I was originally looking at the G-system or G-force but for the money this appears to be a lot better value if it's all it's made out to be. Opinions anyone?

Axe-FX

i think its too new at least in local context, doubt there be much info on the actual performance on this, from a user views, without the influence of advertising and markting words.

perhaps looking over to some overseas forums big into rack gadget might have better result, imho

i've checked out places like TGP and HC. and everyone is RAVING about it. yeah anyway just worth a shot asking. who knows? someone here might have it.

ahh, true, there might be people having this here

It seem to be of a certain trend(at least for the last 4/5 years which i noticed) round the forum here, seldom see much of thread on rack gear. So somehow gotten the idea that either those using rack not really active in here or that not much people in here using those kinda

haha i myself don't use a rack, but i was looking at those, and it looks rather interesting. thing is I use an amp head and I don't really want to sell it for a separate preamp + power amp, so i might just do it petrucci-style and make a custom rack with ventilation. that's gonna burn quite a hole in my wallet though. tbh i don't really see the advantage in using a rack, besides aesthetic reasons.

if for the performanc wise, rack stuff would definitely give more to the end user, imho.

heh, tweaking wise, theres definitely more things to play with then average pedals and stuff. But can be hassle to bring rackcase around(for gigging purposes) and if anything goes wrong half way thru shows, it can be a nightmare.

if just for home playing, recording and stuff, rackmount can be a useful tool, combined with music softwares. Might ended up tweaking too much and not getting the music out.

this is becoming a 1-to-1 discussion haha.

yeah i agree with the tweakability. the parameters that are adjustable are insane. little things that don't even make a diff to an untrained ear can be tweaked with all these digital effects. so if the quality of the effects are there, i'd say it's a pretty good tradeoff for simplicity. even though many many people would rather 3 knobs than 4 buttons to adjust 400 different parameters.

also, another thing is the ultra axe-fx comes up to just over 3000 SGD, about the price of a half a high-end pedalboard. it also doubles as a preamp with hundreds of amp and cabinet simulators. so if the quality is as realistic as they claim it is, it is somewhat of a bargain, in the relative sense of course.

heh, 1 to 1 but least i try to stay on track without sidetracking to anything with hint of sexual innuendo

personally, i still prefer pedals as well. And if wanna tweaking, i go the software path. Over the years, theres lotsa software which also can have the similar functions/tweakability as those rack mount. Only thing i guess most of us still not really into, is plugging getar into midi controller and with a laptop to rock out. Logistic wise, its much simple to bring around for shows. With rack mount stuff and having different module inside those case, its going to be much heavier and bigger to carry around.

pedalboards, amps should still be around for a while i guess. I would really fear staring at pics of laptop and midi controller in future on geetar gear forums. Haha

back in 80s, rackmount was the rage, till the 90s came, pedals revisit again and combination of pedals and rackmount pass by. It wont be long perhaps, most geetarers(amateur, tan jiak geetarers etc) using laptop, midi controllers/keyboard to play geetar

yeah i haven't grown accustomed to using my computer as an amplifier. firstly i don't think my JBLs will do justice to my tone. even running my pocket POD through for half an hour gave me a headache, plus I much prefer good old speaker cabinets. also, it takes away part of the fun imo, with everything on a screen instead of physical knobs to turn and switches to flick. i'm sure some of the new high tech ones (amplitube and whatnot) may actually model an actual amp realistically, but still I'll pass on software for the real thing all the time. i can just imagine a "Post pics of your rig" thread filled with screenshots. =/

To break your 1 on 1 action.

Rack mount is tedious. Anyone who fooled around with an actual PA system can tell you that. The time you take to perfect that sound could probably take you just a simple "oops" on the guitar knobs to screw it up.

I hope the day when our fingers feel only cold hard plastic and not the melodic vibrations of metal through our fimgers never come.

and the innuendo has arrived. sorry >_<

well the case is basically the same with my amp and a standard effects board now. a little tweak on a knob and that perfected rhythm sound goes to hell. i suppose no one has had any experience with the Axe-FX as per thread title then, but while this discussion is ongoing, pros and cons of rack-mounting?

i guess i must be one of the few to use a rack setup here.. (rackenstein maybe?). we drag 2 fully loaded 4U (soon to be 6U) racks to every MV show we do..pretty damn troublesome, but worth it.

forget the clips online, i just saw meshuggah live a week ago and they were using axe-fx ultras direct to PA..it sounded godly. that pretty much sold me on the axefx instantly and its now on my shopping list hehe

1) sell the amp
2) keep the amp
3) give me the amp, i will destroy it in the name of rock and roll
4) keep the amp for rainy day usage
5) start a lucky draw in soft.com.sg, give it to the winner in here

1) maybe
2) no idea how to incorporate if the amp models are good enough for meshuggah to use as their sole amplification. damn it must be some solid stuff right there.
3) rock and roll has taken enough of my stuff! it's high time it's left me alone! >_<
4) most probable choice
5) dude i don't want muhdzr with my mesa.

i was under the impression that 3rdlogic ordered an Axe-Fx. u might wanna check with him. i've also been looking at the Rocktron Prophesy II as a close alternative to Axe Fx....

hmm the prophesy looks pretty interesting too, especially the price. but the hype surrounding the axe-fx is just drawing me towards that instead =/ btw, does anyone have a full list of differences between the axe-fx ultra and standard? the website is really vague.

EDIT: nvm found it Feature Comparison
