finnish's producer example in detail.

a rapper once told me what they do best is they take what's classic and "destroy" it. when new age consumers listen and says that kicks ass and old folks listen to it and says that sucks , they have done a good job.

But... that "taking" process is a little disturbing now that I came across this video, but that's what pays the bills I guess.. could learn a thing or two ..

the producer "samples" (ripoff/steal) from the common people in the tracker scene, the common people "samples" (download/steal) from the producer in the torrent scene.

some would call it ripping off.

some would say it's redoing something old into something fresh.

hiphop music has revolved a lot in sampling and doing it your own way.

e.g sampling off records

creativity to some, stealing to others.

Hip Hop used to be awesome, even if it sampled many things. Nowadays I just cringe every time I hear the new Soulja Boy or TI or Lil Wayne. I love old school hip hop so much.

most RNB + Electro + hiphop use samples from other artist and use it as their new songs.
like how timbaland took crystal castles songs.
even electro artist like justice or daft punk does it

Yay finally someone in Singapore who knows about Crystal Castles!

It was never the same after musicians sued each other for royalties. It used to be that hip hop was plenty of samples pasted together. That's OK, because it counts as an original work. Nowadays they will only sample from 1 place and it's necessarily derivative. Many great rap classics made between 1988 and 1991 had hundreds of samples. Now this practice has ended - we will never hear the likes of "3 feet high and rising", "Fear of a Black Planet" or "Paul's Boutique" ever again.

The worst case was "Bittersweet Symphony". Richard Ashcroft does not get paid for his greatest hit because some asshole manager from the Rolling Stones sued him and got all the royalties. (The song is now credited to Jagger-Richards). Now that's theft.
