Fender Strat MIM or MIJ?

Shopped around for my first electric and kind of decided on the Strat. Found that there are Strats from Mexico and Japan. Appreciate anyone can advice on strenghts and cons of each. Thanks.

the Jap fenders in general display very good workmanship & tone. however, some dislike the feel of these guitars, if you are in the market for one, audition one personally & then consider.

the mex strats are also decent upstarts but many would cite the electronics as something that could've been better. similarly, try one in person then part with cash.

the american fenders are still tops in terms of construction, tone & feel. best if you could scout for used units.

I do believe that although yamaha singapore is still listed as the local dealer for G&L, but for the last couple of years, there are no sighting of any G&L guitar/bass at all in their shop.......

The MIA G&L are definitely much more expensive than the mim or mij fender. Unless its the MIK tribute series of G&L guitar, then maybe its more comparable with the MIJ fender.

Appreciate all your input - have a better idea now.

I saw the ads in DreamtimeMusic - seems reasonable price if they are MIA Strats. Has anyone inspect or tried these Strats. I'll try to check them out this weekend.

Cheers!

If I'm not wrong (please correct me if I'm wrong), the MIA strats that dreamtime music are the older standard strat which has lower quality when compared to current MIA strats.

MIMs and MIAs standard strats have recently upgraded to an alder body from 2002, from the more inferior poplar body. Alder gives versatility to the tone and is more popular and desired wood material in solid bodied guitars, apart from ash and mahogany.

MIJ strats (vintage models) also changed from the soft basswood to alder/ash bodies recently.
Do check the specs properly before purchasing.

I myself have a MIM strat brought in directly from the US (2003). i have to admit that the craftmanship is pretty good (the neck joints, frets and neck relief all are well done) but electronics are on the lower end. But do go for the maple neck. Nothing beats the feel of playing a 1 piece neck of pure maple.

i hope there's proper references to the strat models discussed here as it's confusing me, if not the rest of us...

'Standard Strat' by name are mexican models. therefore there's no such thing as Made in US 'Standard Strat'.

the current US made strats are the 'American Series', prior to its name change in 2000, they were known as the 'American Standard'. these sport alder bodies since its conception in 1986... hence my question to veez: where did you read the recent body change to alder?

i've got the american standard strat MIA, its got all the same specs as the new american series, except the pickups right? Is the sound diiference really a lot? The price jump is from 1000+ for the american standard, and now the american series is 2000+.

Why are the prices increasing? The steve vai signature ibanez also increased by $1000!!! earlier this year.

Everything is increasing. The goldtop in guitar gallery rose from $5000 to $7000 plus. In just a few months time. The US dollar is falling and there is a FTA but why are still US imported goods getting more expensive?
