fender standard strat, a standard HSS or a john mayer signature strat.

I'm interested in buying either a fender standard strat, a standard start HSS or a john mayer signature strat.

I do not really know the difference between them and would like to hear your opinions on which is the best buy.

Thanks.

Wrong section, bro. Post in the Guitar gear section.

In response to your question, the most versatile among those you've listed would be the HSS strat. Why is because the HSS strat has a humbucker in the bridge position and two singlecoils in the middle and neck position. The other two if I'm not wrong have singlecoils in all three positions.

With singlecoils you can do jazz, blues, soft rock, pop rock etc. But with the humbucker you can play the same stuff as above, as well as metal and hard rock, because of the fatter, heavier sound that humbuckers produce.

Versatility is definitely important because your tastes will probably change here and there (who's doesn't?) so might as well get a guitar that can almost do it all. No need to trade, sell or buy another guitar.

I can do hard rock on a SSS guitar :P It's all about preference, what kind of music suits you, for me, I go for the single coil guitars as I find them more versatile as I really love that twangy, sharp sound of the single coil in the bridge position. With the right amps and effects, you can get heavy metal and even hard rock out of it. It's all about preference, the feel also is important, if possible, go try out the different guitars you have stated, and get the one that feels best. No use buying a guitar you can't connect to. If you're looking forward to doing metal and hard rock mostly, I suggest you get a HSS strat, there is a humbucker in the bridge and provides a fatter tone and higher gain.

Cheers,
WWH

I'd go for HSH... Ibanez FTW~!!! Can play all sorta genres. If you want single coil sound just swap the humbucker for a single coil in humbucker slot. This is more versatile imho. Twangy for certain solos, don't exactly sound that good under distort...

*edit* btw, you nvr say wat sorta music you'd like to play on this guitar... if you're going for pop, blues, then the SSS lorz. HSS gives you more variation in tone, if you're looking for a fatter tone for your bridge.

(P.S. I'm going HSH, before going SSS. Do metal and hard rock with HSH, still can pull of decent rock. SSS for the twangy bluesy sounds...)

You don't know the difference yet you want a JM Signature Strat?
Dude thats a $2.8k "I Don't Know" question! Lol..
Try what you like then buy.. Shouldn't buy on impulse, especially if you don't know what you're doing..

hahah thanks for the info man.... i'm still pretty new to this.

DAM the GAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DAM the GAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, GAS is when you can't stop buying...

Not when you can't stop drooling. That's called wanting instead...

Unless you mean to tell me you've bought everything you've listed here that you wanted already.. Then I'd say you've got GAS... Like Subversion...

Hmmm... Saw some HSS strats at Davis, but are all fenders, so might overshoot your budget.

saw a couple of Standard Strats (MIJ) at davis, which are slightly less than 1k.
but like wat they said, i want something more versatile...

well, i'll take a look at davis again. thanks dude!

If you're looking for a Fender, shouldn't you get one that they shine best at? (ie.SSS) From what I know, The MIJ Fender Standard Strats with 'em Texas pick-ups should shine quite well.

but they are single-coils right?
personally, i do prefer the HSS series coz of the humbucker..
well, i also not too sure which one shines more.
pls advice, dude..

If you wan a HSS configuration, get an Ibanez, MusicMan Silouette Special, etc. Fender in HSS is............... just not Fender IMO.

I second that. IMHO you should really consider what kinda guitar sounds sing to you. Getting a Fender for the sake of the brand ain't worth it. If I wanted a SSS, and had LOADS of cash to spare, yeah, then a Fender strat is the way to go. However, if I can get an alternative, ie: Timbre SR200, that costs fractions of a Fender, and still sing, I'll get the SR200.

If you're into humbuckers, why Fender? Look at Les Pauls, or Ibanez RGs, they're rock solid guitars built for humbucking styles. A single humbucker at the bridge won't suffice if you like the humbucking style.

CONVERT TO THE IBANEZ LOVER'S CLUB!!! BUY IBANEZ RGs and FEEL THE DIFFERENCE!!! (This is my alter-ego speaking...) TWIN HUMBUCKERS or HSH FTW!!!

Its simple really. If you already know how to play, just go ahead to shops and try out various guitars. If not, get someone who does to go with you shopping. I'm sure some softies around here wouldn't mind helping out given they are free. Its better than getting a branded guitar, that you wouldn't enjoy playing cos you just don't like the sounds it produces. Though I think the amp is really more of the important part.

make sure you check the specs of the fender from davis before buying. apparently it seems like some of them cant tell the difference between basswood and alder. I ended up buying from TYMC instead.

no.. it's not that i wanna get a branded guitar.
coz currently i own an epiphone, which is a double humbucker, and i'm thinking of getting a single-coil guitar. but i still can't let go of humbucking tone.
so i thought maybe i should get the HSS series, which have a bit of both.
well..... or maybe i'm juz being too complicated. haha... ignore me...
