FBI raided Gibson Nashville

Sources say the Nashville-based guitar manufacturer is being investigated for violating the Lacey Act, a key piece of environmental law, for importing endangered species of rosewood from Madagascar.

oh my god.... i'm moved to tears :(

look at this you gibson-bashing bastards!!! look at the length to which they would go to just to get us quality guitars!!!!!

im not going out today anymore... i'm going to to stay at home and reflect. :(

maybe the fbi just want to know if gibson really puts the top notch quality materials in their guitars. and if its legal and true, it will really be a good publicity for gibson.

Talk about business ethics. That's disgusting. Like those bloody china companies that spew copious quantities of untreated waste into the environment.

nice! get a lil taste of their own medicine for always laying lawyers onto other companies, time they have someone take a bite at them too.

If Gibson doesn't care about endangered species going extinct for ever, then I'm not willing to spend even a dollar on Gibson. So what if they're an iconic company, I can get superb guitars from elsewhere.

With technological advancements nowadays, you don't necessarily need a Gibson anymore. There's always Edwards, Burny, Tokai and MIK Epiphone to name a few.

Why are you guys taking that the claims are true? FBI are still investigating and Gibson is giving their full support... For all you know it might only be a false alarm

Hmm, FBI should investigate why Gibson guitars these days are lacking quality. :D

But on a serious note, for FBI to do a raid, I really hope that the person who tipped them off knows what he's doing. If it turns out to be a false alarm, a lot of people who did their initial investigations are sure going to be embarrassed

It's not a false alarm. Gibson used Madagascar Rosewood in some of ther guitars (mainly acoustics). What Gibson is NOT guilty of, is buying with the knowledge that it was illegal. Apparently what transpired was that they bought from a legal supplier who sold them illegal stock.

Gibson apparently didn't know the wood was illegal. Henry J, is on the rainforest conservation committee of some green effort. In fact, he's the chairman. he started the Smartwood project for this.

So, the facts are: Gibson used illegal wood. Gibson did not know the wood was illegal. The wood was sold to them through a supplier whom they trusted and apparently had all the documentation.

The thing here is that the Madagascar Govt themselves are selling the wood. It's some green effort organisation that's refusing to let companies buy the woods. The wood itself is not endangered, but the species of Lemurs that require the habitats are. So, in chopping down the wood, the habitats are destroyed.

O.o

Don't mind me, but I find this awfully strange. So the Madagascar Government permits the sale of this wood, which is against International Laws to do so. So why don't UN do something about the Madagascar Government?!

It's not against International Laws. It's against US federal law to import such wood because it endangers the habitat of the lemurs. Not so much the rest of the world. See how differences in law can lead to such things?

The Madagascar Govt is apparently new, and they're trying to raise the economy of the country.

This actually isn't as big an incident enough to raise to the UN. Honestly.

gibson will sort it out. they got lots of moolah to fight their case
