Favourite Overdrive Pedal?

NOC3 Pure Drive Compact.

With the clean blend, you can get it be even more transparent than the timmy. Imagine your clean picking dynamics with a slight hint of breakup in a wet/dry mix. It also stacks wonderfully with all my other drive pedals and it sounds great on its own - something I which i couldnt get with the timmy or other TS-style pedals. Most just either sounded too flat and sterile or had too much compression and mid-hump.

My always-on pedal, when i'm not using it to cop some Dumble tones. It does the Dumble thing better than the Zendrive btw - which was an overpriced and overhyped piece of crap imo.

Hehehe ized a post on ur pure drive finally. Hmmm although i never tried the pure drive myself per se but i read and heard loads of great stuff abt it, great that u got yourself one bro!

As for me my fave ODs, they will be my Barber Direct Drive and Barber Silver LTD! Besides whatever that has already been widely covered all over the internet, one thing that not many pple know is that they stack damn well like lego bricks lol, and damn they can create sick tones when stacked with the 7theaven!

oh yes ... Barber love....nice...
I got me a pimped OD similar to Timmy style with bass and treble to suit.... it's not like what Ized described ... sotechnically it's not a clone ...I guess !!

I think your interpretation of the Timmy sounds fantastic - quite unlike the Timmy or the Cool Cat TO...much more open than both. It sounded pretty similar to my Pure Drive when it comes to the transparent clean boost factor - just short of the blend knob and the external clipping switch (athough I know yours has internal ones). Both pedals stack well with the 7th.

Haha Mr Bukka I already like the "open" sound of the Direct Drive...I think it does the marshall sound so much better than the crunchbox....less compression and more amplike. Havent heard it stacked with the 7th yet but from what you described, sounds killer hehe.

best!

I conclude that the best od is the most transparent one !:mrgreen:

best transparent OD + cheapo guitar = bad sound.
nice rich tone transforming mid hump OD aka TS + lousy guitar = still a nice mid range sound:)

i've tried the pure drive as well, loved it for a while because of its transparency too. but i still preferred the variety and characteristics i got with edder's sahasrara. i can get more mids, i can get more prescence. i can get really fat sounds too..

Artec Blues Overdrive ^.^

One of the creamiest overdrives I own. For my own tonal pleasures, at literally half the price... (I love discounts) ^.^ Allows me to hit the appropriate tones.

Boss od-3. I like its overdriven sound spiced with clean overtones. mmmm... yummy.

But if i can afford one - it would be Fulltone fulldrive 2

Cool....i bet you havent tried the new compact version though. It can be dialed to sound thicker with that mid hump if you so desire. anyways the PD gets to Sahashara territory with the clipping switch on the smoothest and most compressed mode if I remember.

I dont really need a pedal with a huge mid hump or saturation of sorts....cos if i need that i just hit my MIJ DS-1 into the 7th for instant saturation and chugga with that nice squishy feel for leads- something you cant get with TS style pedals due to the mid hump and compression.

nice.. haha i only have 2 drives on my board so.... they need to do everything for me!
eh but the PD's mix knob is seriously, SERIOUSLY the bomb. i can slowly tweak with it til i hit the sweet spot between clean and breakup, and get the tones i exactly want from that pedal...
if i'm not wrong, the sparkledrive has a mix knob too right? but i havent tried one..

yeah i havent tried the newer, smaller-boxed version. i wonder how different it is! the older one was more like a one trick pony, and the boost was quite disappointing:(

Rather contradictory la both your statements. Hmm. So you can get your tones from it but its a one trick pony? :)

I don need the boost cos i already have a boosty, and frankly I dont like the idea of being limited to just using a boost after the PD....what if I want and need it somewhere else?

Im using it as an always on but i find it can go to cranked Dumble and Blackface territory through my amp on clean. Have yet to hear a TS style pedal do that. Its also definitely more transparent as a clean boost compared to the Timmy or the Coolcat knockoff.

The sparkle drive's blend isnt really a blend knob per se...it only has one op-amp for the od circuit so the blend isnt a real blend....it just adjusts the signal impedence and adds more highs to give that illusion that your cleans are blended but they are not. The PD comes with 2 opamps...one for OD and another for the blend circuit so it actually works.

Anyways i dint like the sparkle drive, its very mild and light for an OD - doesnt thicken up tone like how most ts style pedals do or increase saturation like how the timmy does. Voicing is somewhat similar to the Sahashara but its less versatile and not as sweet. The Sahasrara can also be tweaked with the pregain knob to increase overall brightness and presence for more "balls" so to speak but that SD cant. It just simply sits on top of your basic tone which is probably nice if you are playing it into a clean amp but it just dint work for me as a stacker to push an amp or dirt pedal.
