Falsetto?

It seems like when i want to hit falsetto.my throat gets stuck as in i can see the blood vessels and i feel alot tension and i can barely squeak a sound out.

But the strange thing is that that day i went to kbox to sing with my friends.I keep straining my voice where i keep trying to hit high notes where i cant so i decided to stop and when my voice was about to reach the point where sore throat comes,i can sing falsetto without straining,LOL. Then after a few days rest when my throat recovers le,the same thing happen again, tension when hitting falsetto so infact, i haven't hit any falsetto notes yet.

Why is it that some people no need training they can hit falsetto without feeling any tension?

Also, i heard that some people even after training also won't falsetto because of their vocal type as in they are in the low range type

Hi,

when singing you have to remember that everybody's voice is unique and different from one another.

sometimes if u try to sing a cover, you may or may not be able to reach that certain high note (without a strain); because of the different vocal styles that different artistes have.

*

falsetto allows you to reach notes that you sometimes cannot reach in your "singing voice", sometimes to achieve that in your singing voice it takes time and practice to Slowly stretch your vocal chords.

the same goes for if you pamper your voice too much and dont use it regularly you might find yourself not being able to sing a song in a certain key you used to a few years ago.

also with that being said, vocal warm ups are very important.
warming up your voice enables you to reach higher notes easily.

of course warming up does not necessarily mean you scream or push your vocal chords to reach the highest note that seems almost impossible;
sometimes singing in a comfortable key again and again can also double as a warm up.

i myself sing at pubs; and i find my voice more "solid" after a good 45 mins of singing.

hope that helps!

I'll just answer your queries from a SLS point of view.

1) To begin with, its crazy to know that you're actually hurting your throat while trying to execute a falsetto. Once its a strain, you know you've totally did it all wrong. This pointer should also apply to any other singing techniques. You said you're barely able to squeak a sound. That is only because you're squeezing your muscles too much and your larynx is totally out of place. Prolong abuse on your throat can really damage your thyroid glands.

2) SLS - Speech Level Singing. Pretty self explanatory. It means, sing as though you're talking. That includes the high notes. You should feel as comfortable as if you're basically speaking with ease while you're executing the high notes. This technique has got to do with how to learn to control your larynx and keeping it down and at the same time, switch from chest voice to head voice ( most singers who hasn't undergone training would not be able to do the switch and hold your larynx down at the same time. )

If you start in your speaking voice range and sing upwards keeping the same feeling, what happens is you will get more and more strained, and eventually you'll break into a strained falsetto.

So getting into a relaxed falsetto is about realizing when your speaking voice can't go any further and letting it go, so a different set of muscles that let you sing higher can take over.

That's the ultra simplified version :) In practice you can't just make things happen like that, it takes training.

Then how do i relax my larynx when singing higher and higher?i told my teacher i try not to think of anything when going higher and about straining but it stills goes up and my teacher keep telling me to relax.

I already relax but the larynx keeps going up leh.

If you're anything like me, your larynx is so conditioned to tense up that even when you think you are doing nothing, you are STILL tensing up. Over time, the bad habits have become what feels like "doing nothing".

So how do you fix that? Well there are a whole lot of exercises that will help to break those habits. A good teacher can find which ones work best for you. What DOESN'T work is just saying "relax" without telling you HOW to relax, so if your teacher is doing that, you need a more effective teacher.

I would love to give you a simple exercises that would fix it, but it's just not that easy.

Bro you should observe 'King Diamond', maybe he is not of your style bu i can tell you that his vocal range of falsetto is amazing. Check him out!

Haiz.then wat do i do now? But its strange cause although i am under "stressed" singing,i am able to expand my vocal range? =x

Anything to stop this habit? My teacher keep saying although i never think about the larynx moving, its still me that is making it move =x

Sian.u guys know scream?the voice screaming?i cant do a scream at all which i think is my voice habit too =(. When i try to scream, nothing comes out of my throat

the higher your vocal register go, the brighter the note will sound. ( of course u need to use yr diaphragm to support & push the air fast & quick enuf to reach the top & sustaining it at the same time)

But at the same time yr mouth shape & vaccum space created in yr mouth will determine thin (piercing) or thick vocal.

ya i know..right know,im sorta like pulling chest, tat means i strain at high notes at my chest.its like impossible to access headvoice, when i am at the limit of my chest voice which is abit strain,it den goes into a falsetto and not a headvoice

yes, jack neo should be using his falsetto when he acts as liang po po, so if u sound like that without straining, then it's your falsetto.. now u can try to control and change the quality

so is there any ways to access headvoice and not falsetto when i reach the limit of my chest voice where it wants to "flip" to falsetto?
