Factors of a "true" musician?

Whats the defination of " true" in the context? A "true" musician or just
" musician" is a term for a person who plays music - most likely as a profession - as as a librarian runs the library, veternarian works with animals etc etc..just a profession.

The other qualities mentioned here are good / perferable traits we hope to see in musicians etc but sad to say this isnt a perfect world and while I identify with what everyone is writing about, I hardly see these qualities nowadays sometimes. Dont get get me wrong, I know a few "true -blue" musos out there hwo really care for their craft but I also know a lotta of musos who are in it for the glamour, publicity & money.

I'm sure everyone here knows musos on both side of the coin ...right....? 8)

...Some people say you're only a true musician if you can improvise/play by ear/sight read music notations...

DoubleBlade, anything troubling you when you defined yourself a musician?

Bassically, Musician is someone who working on music.

For my understanding, Musician is someone who play music.

Ideally, the person's music (composed, arranged, improvised or played) must be UNIQUE in order to become good musician.

Well, IMO, a musician is one who constantly seeks to express himself with his music. He is always changing/developing because music is not a constant/stagnant entity. He never sits back and is just "satisfied" with what he has done, he will always want to top himself, have that drive to craft the best music that represents himself.

In that sense, Malmsteen is not a musician. Great player but thats it.

Vai is a musician in all sense of the word. Always evolving.

Its kopitiam! :) Lets just talk and share views. You'll never know, reading up someone else' ideas can open your eyes to something you may have missed!

You know what? I have seen alot of these so called true musicians who fitted into every one of your catogories and they're backing up people like Yingwie malmsteen, Metallica and Scopions in their songs. Some of you might not agree with me, they're the so called musicians in this _____(insert name here) Symphony Ochestra. Boring musicians.......

A true musician mst be able to move pple with his music.. doesn't matter if u know a thousand scales or just one scale..

But music is not all about performing, or moving others.

Musicians or not.
They still have to find a way to earn a living. Else music can only be your hobby.

I think you won't spend more time in life trying to make a living than on your hobby unless you are still schooling and living off parents or already retiring.

But to have gone into the profession means u should be good in what u do in the first place, and manage to make a living with it.

I agree on what Cloudsky said.
and what deedeeboi said on the 3rd line.

'true' musician must actually learn to appreciate all kinds of music. For i believe every masterpiece lies a meaning to it.

i wld think a true musician is one who believes in his music and doesnt give a shit about what other pple or the critics say.
