I'm just curious to find out pple's opinions on extreme metal and non-extreme metal. By extreme metal metal, I'm referring to the more aggressive and darker side of metal - such as death, black, doom and thrash. For non-extreme metal, examples are genres such as progressive, traditional, power, symphonic etc.

Which one do you prefer? And which one do u believe is more representative of heavy metal genre?

I personally prefer extreme metal most of the time, esp death metal. But I don't mind listening to some progressive and power metal bands as well.

woo first to vote!

i like both.mixing the 2 influences the music i create at times.

too extreme at times can get really irritating.thrash is fun to listen to.

And which one do u believe is more representative of heavy metal genre?

In some school of thoughts, Led Zeppelin was categorised as "heavy metal". Arguably one of the significant bands of that era, but I personally am surprised to see them fitted in that category.

But perhaps it shows one thing: one is not "more representative" than the other. They are from different classes of the same school. Even nu-metal (<--- this one can consider their class report card damn chialat one ah )

I'll prefer extreme metal, if you ask me. But I love Symphony X, Epica and Kamelot too. So yeah.

It's definitely good to expose yourselves to every genre. Well, maybe except nu-metal. RATM and Slipknot are the only exceptions.

My vote goes to non extreme metal, I kind of moved from behemoth and gang to yngwie malmsteen/marty friedman/megadeth awhile back. Probably because pure brutality wasn't really my thing.

Hmmm.. Went from listening neo-classical/power/trash to melodic death ages ago.. But still don't mind either, although now more into Blues and Classic Rock..

Still like these bands:
Hammerfall (Top 3 metal)
Nevermore (Top 3 metal)
Arch Enemy (Top 3 metal)
As I Lay Dying (would have been top, but since it ain't truly metal)
Children of Bodom
Stratovarius
Iron Maiden
Metallica

But nothing's gonna take away my RATM!!! And SRV!!! And AC/DC!!!:mrgreen:

I guess I like abit of both :/

none of that obscure stuff though.
I go soulseek chat with those ang moh they all scold me poser. haha!
then they start naming me 20 obscure bands that i've never even heard before.

stupid elitists..

I'm not one to favour a certain genre or style, since I play pretty much anything nowadays. But I've been into metal longer than anything else so yeah, a bit hard to decide. But I like it either extreme or epic, or just plain heavy.

So I voted both... Haha.

Goth Doom Metal
Symphonic Doom Metal
Funeral Doom Metal
Atmospheric Doom Metal
Death Doom Metal
Epic Doom Metal

I USED TO Listen To Mostly Doom Metal Bands Like
The Sins of Thy Beloved, Forest Of Shadows, Morphia, Lethian Dreams, My Dying Bride and of course - Draconian!!!

considered extremela =X

But Now Me Ish All ROudner~

i voted for extreme metal and the overall results surprised me. majority like non-extreme. thought majority would like both.

i like metal cos it's aggressive/abrasive, so i like the nasty sounding stuff haha. when i hear power metal/operatic symphonic metal i kinda cringe. to me it's like  hahaha

it's weird, cos when i tell people i'm into metal i think they think of something like iron maiden rather than, say, suffocation. also many metalheads have great love for the classic nwobhm stuff e.g judas priest/maiden or sabbath, but i almost exclusively like stuff starting from mid-80s metallica/slayer to present day, which is more extreme.

whatever it is...

lol, i listen to both types =]=]

but i think i'm more onto the progressive and symphonic side due to their ochestral elements lah.

i dunno but somehow sometimes when i listen to extreme metal they give me that feeling that they're being extreme for the sake of being extreme and not because what they want to express through their music is extreme.

well, that's juz imo, haha.

what eva it is,

METAL rules!!!! \m/ \m/
