External HDD or Portable HDD better??

Recently I use my HDD as an external hard disk(the big one) and now it is not working and need to get it fixed to retrieve my data that costs more than $300...

So , im not sure whether portable hard disk or external hard disk is better/long life as in

Can live long

wont cause problems

Thanks experts...

I guess you are referring to the 3.5" and the 2.5". "Better" has different definition. 3.5" is of course faster than 2.5" in terms of seek/read and write time. Also, 3.5" comes in larger capacity.

As for longer-lasting, it depends on how you take care of your HD. Being portable, it tends to get bumped around, which can be a problem. Most important is to ensure the HD is stable and not shaking when being used, which could damage it.

me and cheez have discussed about this before.

hard disk (especially the new generation ones) is not reliable. (I had a 1990s CONNOR 250mb hard disk that still works last year! but threw it away cos now thumbdrives are easily bigger than that) MY best way to backup/archive your data is to burn to dvd... twice.

now $200 = 500gb hard disk around there right? if you ask me, I already have more than terabyte (320gbx4) of hard disk. no way I'm gonna store my precious data on it. I spend some of my free office time burning dvds (don't require me to be there) burning at 4X speed with verification.

for $200, I'd spend $50 (now price drop already I think) on 100 X 4.37gb = 437gb dvds.
437 x 4 = 1748gb I can backup most of my important data DOUBLE COPIES with my pants off and still have remaining dvds left to throw around like frizbee. Verbatim and Imation are good brands.

ppl might not go with my methods cos it takes a real good habit of organisation to get it working nicely but for your info, I have photos/data preserved well ever since the mid 90s when I first got my internet, experienced hard disk crashed numerous times but thanks to floppy diskettes (dangerous/unstable/small capacity) > CD-rs (tend to write error.medium capacity) > DVDs (big enough, cheap, stable) , saved my ass.

60¢ worth

lol isnt external and portable the same??just fancy names..
and lol..there isnt a thing as say better?? or longer life spent..
come on...most hdd would run well for like say 5-6 years?? and it starts to act wierd..
lol what can you expect for like 90 dollars?
i got a 120 gig for 90 bucks last week..and its the 2.5 laptop size hdd...

and yeah..you can go about saying buy DVD or blueray to burn la...yeah it last longer...but that depends on the way you store your cd too..if all is well..you can keep them for say 10 -20 years...

its all about prefrence...dvd you get like 4gig... x a box... maybe you get like 60gig max for 15 dollars??
for long term storage dvd>hdd
