Epiphone guitars

i tried my friend's Epiphone Les Paul Goldtop before n it wasnt bad actually. since Epiphone's a sub brand of Gibson, i guess the standard's there. my guitar's an Epiphone Limited Edition G-400 SG n its awesome. i can play acdc's thunderstruck intro by just hammering the string. if ur on a budget, i guess ur pretty much safe wit Epiphone.

yo flash_tay,

talking about finishing. what is meant by all ebony? the whole guitar?

how's ebony compared to other finishes?

Epiphone LP Standard is cool. Good for beginners too.
Those who cant afford Gibson can start off with Epi first. Got enuf already then get a Gibson.
Wont go wrong. If u want a mahogany tone at affordable price. But Epi.

this is where buyers have to be careful- not all Epi stuff are mahogany. we'd think that since Epi is a licensed copier of Gibson, the same wood material would be faithfully used, sadly it's not the case. when it comes to Epi, buyers convenientl believe that it's a Gibson by another name- this is too simplistic.

Hmm

I agree with subby... Epiphone axes is not a direct replacement for Gibson axes. The mahogany body is mixed with alder & their stock pickups arent as good as the Gibson's one, but decent enough to pull off some stunts.

In other words, Epi is like a lower end model for Gibson, which makes it quite affordable.

i would never buy an epi LP

why? too ex (save a bit more for Tokai/Burny) and the QC isnt that good. pups are shit

my friend owns one, and i hate it so much. when we jammed, the neck is super uber muddy, sounds like crap. so i always do the intro

and also his epi LP standard always gets out of tune, wat crap, then when doing a gig, he played intro and it was out of tune...sad...

guitars with angular string pull (eg: Gibson) suffer from tuning instability more than those with a straight one (eg: Fender). however, there are other factors responsible for this, namely:

*nut slots
*tuners

again, even the Gibson LPs aren't reputable tuning-wise. however, if you invest in good replacements, your guitar will pull through. we'd do well to reflect why Gibson does not equip their guitars with locking tuners for instance, to combat this tuning issue.

goodness, it seems that this thread is turning into an Epi LP unbecoming features highlight. i hope it won't offend Epi LP owners too much, it's not that we're making this up or something.

I won't dare to say all Epiphones are good. But defintely there are keepers. I have a Goldtop 56' RI and the Epi P90s are really good IMO, weight is just fine. I dare say the P90s is the best pickup Epiphone produces.

IMO it's not about P-90 pickups doing justice to the Epi LP, it's a clarity issue. if Gibson/ Epi LPs are equipped with pickups which promote clarity, there'll be more fans for sure.

Hee

Haha its good to know the pros & cons of Epiphone guitars so as to help Epiphone owners better upgrade their axes to minimize the flaws :)

Well done subby :supz:

I agree on the pickup issue.
Although my bridge sounds alright to me, the neck is like from a diff planet man!

Lucky my epi is at davis getting some SDs.

Too bad i didn't know much about tokai when i bought my epi, if not i would have certainly gone for the korean ones instead for similar price. The finishes are just amazing even for a maple veneer.

i think epiphone is just using an excuse as is gibson by saying the muddy woman tone is their style and the lack of clarity makes it what it is........this gives them a reason to put in average grade pickups......

but i realize that it is possible to get a certain amount of clarity and tone for personal preference if you were to adjust the poles and pickups yourself......it has worked for me

my stock was a bit muddy for me so i heightened the neck poles for the 1st 3 strings and lowered the bass side for the neck pickup

angusyoung : ebony is the wood for the fretboard i thought epiphone uses ebony but turns out it is actually rosewood and the quality really is quite bad......

i have a epiphone les paul goldtop. The pickup selector went faulty after a few months of playing but its easily replaced. Besides that there arent any significant problems. I'm quite satisfied with the stock pickups. gives a very mellow not though very fat tone. With distortion it sounds quite smooth. Workmanship isnt perfect but its decent enough. Its a korean made, so i cant speak for the made in china ones.

i agree with hifi killer in the sense that those made in korea are superior in both quality and standard........seems that china's ones are quite bad....and for the goldtop it is better than the standard series of the epiphone les paul......

hifi killer: how much did it cost you to replace the pickup selector? and where can it be done?

i got my pickup selector fixed at mikemann's place, i think its around 15 bucks
My goldtop is a standard series, the humbuckers ones not the p90s one.

epiphone's don't come with p-90s right........only the gibson custom authentic series come with p-90s....that's a 56' les paul goldtop i think
