Anyone got any views on Epiphone Les Paul guitars? Thinking of getting a Les Paul but there r so many other brands like Burny, Tokai n etc...dun know which is better...need help in choosing...thanks

hmmm .. i actually am a keen fan of epiphones . aha.

but im sure u have heard of the les pauls being muddy and stuff rite ?

hmm .. wat are ur musical tastes like ?

i tried the epi les paul standard. personally , when i tried it at sweeelee , i actually quite liked it .. the neck feel is there and all .. however . i feel that the pickups are lacking .. the neck pickup is super muddy . whereas the bri pickup .. whoa . i was quite blown away . the tone was sweet.

maybe u would wan to head down to try lar .. not everyone likes a les paul .u c .

u may also wan to check out Davies for their TOKAI love rock les paul copies. yamaha for their burnys.

here is a review done by our very own guitar guru . mr SUBVERSION

go check em out .. and go try em out most importantly !

I agree with siva. It feels pretty solid these days, unlike what people told me about it. Its not long as light as before dunno what wood they using. But becare cause the epiphones r either made from mahogony or from alder. Personally i would prefer the mahogony one. I m not sure how u gonna differentiate them, by weight or by looking at the wood grain. But if u like it, anything goes.

Like siva said the neck pickup SUCKS. the bridge i feel that its ok, but not good enough though. hahaha.

gosh... 'guru' is a bit excessive :smt110

my take on the LP-type guitars is that, there are many good copies now but i have a personal preference for TOKAI because this brand proves its worth, in terms of playability & tone. the good looks, to me, is a bonus.

matthez, let me confuse you a little by saying i prefer the burny to tokais. :) (sorry subversion) :p hehe... tried both. the burny i tried are the MIJ ones and not the yamaha MIK. check out www.orangeguitar.com, this guy carries the MIJ ones.

hey subversion, why don't you try out the MIJ burny and give a review? can link up with the guy, i don't think he will mind if you are just trying out. well, i tried and didn't buy and he was ok. (sorry mr orangeguitar if you are reading this). but he is a nice guy. :)

hmmmm....thanks for the advice...heard from pple the Korean made Burny guitars r not so gd...is it true?? Was thinking of getting a Epi Les Paul Flametop Custom or the Epi Joe Perry Boneyard model at Ishibashi which seems to be selling cheaper there. Burny guitars seems to be quite cheap there too although it didn't say where it's made in.

the joe perry boneyard is gd .. the pickups if im not wrong are the gibsons 1 .

and the neck is a satin finish .. very nice feel

em, what's there to apologize for? i'm not affiliated to any brand names because i've been getting no guitars from any manufacturer for free...

those burny in Ishibashi are MIK. they are they same model as yamaha's. i have a MIK also (honey flame), one model higher than yamaha's or Ishibashi, model RLG-55s. you can view them at:

http://www.orangeguitar.com/forsale/burnyforsale.htm

I have heard reviews from alot of place about the MIK ones and there are a lot of different opinion. good and bad. but i think they are very good for that price range.

BTW, subversion, good job on the reviews of the Burny and Tokai etc. Keep it up. You are most welcome to try out my stock of guitars for review. drop me a mail at sales@orangeguitar.com if you want.

turtlemuscle, thank you for your kind compliments. just curious, when did you try my guitar? but hope you will buy one though... ha. just kidding.

BTW, i have just launched a GUITAR SEARCH service at my website. have written about it in a new topic posted earlier. hope you guys will check it out.

Epi LP Std

Hi,

I used to own a Epi Les Paul Std. Super heavy, but plays very well even with stovk pickups.

Maybe you should get a LP Custom Goldtop.

HI there loneeurope, the guitar search thing u come up with is great. Do u have pics n details for the guitars offered there? it would be great to be able to view it.

hi matthez : yes, i have more detailed description with regards to the guitars e.g. age of guitar etc. i only put basic info up in the site due to time constrain.

i may need a longer time to get hold of pictures and depending on which source the guitar is coming from. but can definately get them. i don't expect my customers to buy the guitar without at least seeing them. :)

do write in to me via mail at guitarsearch@orangeguitar.com for further queries. don't want to flood this forum with irrelevant topics.

alternatively you can post in the "Guitar Search Service" post in this forum.

thanks, just saw it. Im considering something now...haiz...ok. My exams over already, on tuesday the JC ppl exam end, then can arrange to jam some day. :)

the fretboard finishing is pretty bad.....stock pickups will not last long.....it's pretty muddy.....sustain is soso......and this is for epiphone les paul std plus made in china.....don't get a les paul unless you're a fan of it.........

I second flash tay on this. Out of about 4 which I've tried so far, three have had uneven finishing on the neck. Maybe cuz they were from previous years, I dunno. The new one i've tried however, has an el stinko neck pickup, muddy like hell. I suggest you change it as soon as you can, or when it dies on you, which will probably happen first. :p

pickup clarity issues plague the Gibson models as well. it seems that the manufacturer has a reserved mindset when it comes to certain ideas that work for the Les Paul. i do not blame this restrain, it's all in the name of preserving a well-loved tradition; some people swear by the muddy 'woman tone' of the LP.

the problem with Epi LPs, on a personal note, is that there's a less faithful recreation of the real thing. it's all understood because Epiphone works on a different priciple than Gibson, especially so in terms of production costs. however, much can be done if Epi takes the cue from Burny/ Tokai (among others) which offer a more palatable offering.

Epiphone LP Standard is cool. Good for beginners too.
Those who cant afford Gibson can start off with Epi first. Got enuf already then get a Gibson.
Wont go wrong. If u want a mahogany tone at affordable price. But Epi.
