blueprint boss:

i swear by the sansamp bass driver for bass DI unless the bassist brings in an ampeg 8x10 (dream on hahaa..)

as for guitars, check out the palmer PDI-09, it sounds GREAT. i will never use the inbuilt cab sims on any modeller ever again. a little pricy and hard to track down, but well worth it. the hughes and kettner red box is decent as well, doesnt touch the palmer but alot cheap and common on ebay.

i'll post up a recording done with the palmer and bass driver in about a week or so,still yet to track vocals and leads.

no the compression there i was talking bout the overall sound. lead vox i understand you. But i doubt i'll be reopening the session file again anytime soon. already receive money etc. client happy but will consider for future reference. about the snare though. its not bleeding through anyother mic much. its just there not much u can do to the snare without make it sound crap. eg placing snare mics back in-phase makes the snare sound thick and it loses its attack. eqing etc, tried the lot. maybe need to really work harder on it though.

btw for blues music, on the topic of reverb, would it be cool to make it sound as if it were played in a jazz club or a blues club if you get what i mean. like the way the kick sounds. less mixed more raw sound but still hear the attack.

OK!! I'm a bit slow, just heard your song, The Exxit. I get your mix, you go check out U2 for reference. It is obviously real drums, i don't see any reason why it should be programmed. The reason why your drums sound like basketball is this, your BD is too loud, your SD too soft. Your HH and Cymbals not panned properly, all panned into the center and all too soft. I have a feeling you did compress your BD, maybe slightly, becos it seems to be right in front. The BD when compress, you have to push down on the levels, so it gets back behind. I don't hear much sub bass frequency. Use a proper bass drum mic, what did you use?? But actually, the BD is not too bad, it's just too loud. Do some EQing and compression, and you are fine.
Your bass is too soft and guitars should be panned slightly to the left. Play with panning tricks, because your song can get pretty monotonous being without vocals. Play with delay on your lead guitars, not all the way delay. Use the delay as an expression, thinks you want to stress, switch it off, things you want to flow, turn it on.
Do pan envelopes on your strings as an effect.
But biggest thing, i still think your arrangement doesn't express your song's emotion properly. I think i stop now, if i say more, you will probably "kill" me...

actually there not all panned to the centre. I only used stereo pair OH mics and panned extreme left and right, its just when u convert to low mp3 format the wideness of the stereo is reduced.

BadgerS88 : "IMO i think, it doesnt sound OVER compressed. just a bit to noticable compressed " <if> onwards mp3 when the highs are clear then it's gonna be really obvious on cd. and considering if the band sends it in to 987Home for radio play and the thing runs through the radio station's limiter. it's probably gonna get worse.

but yeah looking forward to your next track!

unsane : ah yes, sansamp, one of my later recordings "Rika" , i did the drums/vocals and my friend did the guitars + was using a Sansamp RBI. sansamp makes good stuff.but i'm more thinking on a "great sound/not too expensive/mobility" case. as you know I'm doing location recording , mobility is a serious limitation. I don't have a "crew" for this hehe. but thanks for the recommendation for the palmer PDI9 , it does look like it's got serious good reviews and the mobility of it. who's the local dealer?

the RBI is basically a rack mount version of the bass driver DI with an added mid control..not really essential IMO.. the bass driver DI comes in a regular stompbox size so its definately portable.

on that subject..sansamp stuff is great. i'm on the hunt for a reasonably priced PSA-1..sounds amazing on guitar, bass, vocals even, and just adds to my rack preamp fetish hahaa.

theres no local palmer dealer, in fact tracking down a dealer that doesnt sell for ridiculous prices is pretty hard. i think theres one main US and one main european distributor..try ebay. i lucked out and got mine off peter diezel (diezel amps ;) ) on a forum for under $100 shipped!

EDIT: you have a 5150 right? you might want to look into one of the palmer PGA series with the speaker loads..pricey,but i reckon the tones you'd get out of the 5150+palmer combo would be amazing.

hmmm okay, probably gotta look on ebay or another cheaper alternative..

haha nah, the 5150 belongs to my ex-studio partner. sold it off already ever since I went into location recording.

thanks for the info , will do my own further research, cheers

basssist had his own Hartke bass attack DI. I have my tonelab SE. Keys Korg X50 line in. Drums same mic as before but this time used the SE gemini for room mic just to experiment around the new recording room. Snare, placed 2 SM57 but this time both off axis rather than one on and one off axis. then tested between both in and out of phase to see which one better.

Erm basically just a simple mix.

Thnx blue.
