Elixir VS other string

hi i was wondering why Elixir string price twice more expensive than other string??is Elixir string is the best??

hmm .. in my experience...

Elixirs (polywebs) give the best sound/lifespan.

Uncoated strings sound great~ but that brilliance dies out in a week or two... polywebs lasts up to 2 mths for me.

ooo..then i gotta give it a try too bro..u got spare give me?lol

I usually get them from Brendon , wayyy cheaper then anywhere else...
he'll mail them to your place ... just buy 3 packs and you are set for half a year.

agreed, get em from brendon. and yes, elixers win all other strings hands down when it comes to string life.

From what I've heard Elixir strings snap very easily...

I personally use Ernie Balls, but occasionally when I've got some bucks to spare, I'd get Everly B-52s from Brendon. Ernie Balls last long enough for me, B-52s even longer but with very similar feel to the Ernies.

Hmm.

^^ Mr EugeneSmasher, what circumstances did the elixirs snap? I would be more curious about the user's guitar, and its various possible string breakage points e.g. the saddle, the nut, the string tree, the tuning post etc.

Not sure, they didn't say. But most often its used with Taylors. Could also be that they're heavy strummers, I've snapped strings due to heavy strumming as well. (was using D'addarios)

I almost exclusively use Elixir and occasionally D'addario. I've snapped my Elixir a few weeks ago - first time ever (much to my surprise). I've only snapped my strings 2 or 3 times in my life. And this is the first time Elxir snapped on me. Still, I find Elixir extremely long lasting and very comfortable for the fingers. I don't find it snapping easier than other strings. But then again, I'm not a heavy strummer. Finger picking most of the time with occasionally strumming.

Using Maton guitar.

hmm seriously.. ive not had a single string snap on me while playing... i strum pretty hard too..

ive had more dead guitar input jacks then snapped strings...

what crawldaddy is trying to say is that stuff like the nut might not have a proper cut.. the saddle might have shaped too sharp.. the angle of the nut to tuning machine or string retainer to saddle is wrong.. the frets are not properly crowned and is giving a lot of friction to the string. These are more likely of how string break when using a decent set of string.

Now i personally feel elixir isn't that great.. i dun swear by it.. there are obvious problems(not string breakage) and the users here isn't mentioning. Shall not say anything sensitive. But again.. strings are like underwear.. you've gotta try brands after brands to find which fits you perfectly! haha.

Hmm.

^ yes, exactly what I meant. I have a friend whose old acoustic guitar (won't say what brand) that when played, its G and B strings are incredibly susceptible to breakage even though he had tried many different brands.

And yes, he is also a relatively heavy strummer.

i've only just started using elixers so no experience on it snapping on me yet, but so far they're good.
i tried the b52s, didn't like em at all. they had a really stiff feeling to em. had dead feeling to em when playing. they didn't sound dead at all, just felt dead.
ernie balls feel great and sound great...but...they only last me 1 to 2 days. 3 at most.
previously before the elixers, the best feeling, sounding and lasting strings for me were dean markleys. been using em for years. now i've just tried the elixers, i'm deciding whether to stick with em or switch back to dm(cos of the price). if the elixers last me really really long, then i'll stick with em. cos i really like em. hah.

just say it lah. I don't find any problems with elixirs at all but I don't play that much to destroy any coatings... so these strings store VERY well on guitars thats played twice a year!

hey Gr3y, i think it would be good if you share the problems you've faced with the elixers bro, so those of us who are still considering using them for good can take more notice on that particular problem. and dude! i don't think many of us go around trying brands after brands of underwear, lol, so their not really like strings. haha. :D

haha.. maybe my illustration of the underwear is abit too much. :P

alrite.. i find elixir have this flaking problem.. and after they flake, they aint smooth. And this isn't something tt will happen after a long time but in fact just 1 or 2 weeks.. no doubt i do enjoy the feel of the fresh elixir strings myself but i find it pointless if i have to keep changing long lasting strings. I'm not too sure about you guys but if u play your acoustic often, you'll know this problem do exist..

no offense ah! bro edder force me to say 1 ah!

I think expensive strings aren't worth it if:

1. You're a heavy strummer,
2. You play very often,
3. You use hardpicks,
4. You are saving up for pedals, amps, guitars, whatever.

For the record, I don't use hardpicks :) I use Dunlop .71mm picks. But I don't quite see the logic of spending $25 on a pack of Elixirs or Cleartones when I know I'm the type to break strings easily.

thats the thing about coated strings. they ain't perfect.

HOWEVER that said, I have had better luck with Elixirs compared to those DR colour coated strings. DRs flakes too fast but hell... who knows Elixirs flakes but they is transparent.

Whatever it is... Elixirs ROCKS for me and they have ready Baritone gauge strings.

yea man the DRs flake like nobody's business.

EugeneSmasher, i don't think those points should be used to justify using strings. haha. but if you do always break strings, then yes elixers would be quite a waste of money. there are some of us who strum hard, use hard picks, and play very often but do not break strings.

i shall have to take notice of the elixers flaking. been using em for the past 2-3 weeks quite frequently everyday. they're still pretty fresh.
