Whats the main difference? Can i plug my acoustic in to my electric amp? Will there be any problems?

different voicing to bring out the individual characteristic of each instrument.

only electro acoustic and be plugged into electric guitar amp and vice versa. Whether sound good or not, its another different thing.

everything, start with low volume and onwards

bass into guitar amp also can, guitar into bass amp, also can, as long input to output to input. At least thats what i have been doing and my amp still surviving. Important things is low volume for bass into guitar amp with bass knob almost at 0...

my bro plugged his fender mij jazz bass into his ibanez guitar amp then it went pop, crackle boom! i heard it and i went 8O .. then he was like  *i think im gna get a new amp*.. haha. it started to crackle all the time after tt incident.

heh, that sucks. What was the volume? I had tried yamaha bass, stingray5 and baritone into my carvin belair and even tried recording thru the guitar amp. My guitar amp still surviving. But the main things is that i dont turn up the volume too much. At room volume, its working fine

Hmm.

I suppose there has to be a very good reason (apart from marketing strategy) why there are specific amplifier types for different instruments.

My take on it is that electric guitar styles are so varied so a 'general purpose' type has been developed over the years to cater to the rock generation and the various genres belonging to the rock family.

The bass amp is slightly similar, apart from the fact that due to the different frequency range of the bass compared to the guitar, the sound required of a bass is different from that of a guitar (with exception of development of the 'modern' bass sound).

The acoustic guitar amplifier probably came into being when acoustic guitars started getting pickups of their own, and the need to re-create a 'true' acoustic sound without the hassle of microphones cluttering up the stage started getting really recognised.

SO again, back to what I was about say.. is that each amp serves an individual purpose, but I daresay that the most versatile one would be the bass amp because you can plug almost any instrument with a pickup into it and (with some EQ tweaking) you'd get a decent sound.

just my 1c

bass cannot go into guitar amp. acoustic cannot go into guitar amp. but electric can go into bass and acoustic.
