Edder's Kustom Kvlt DIY '69 Terecaster

Ed, do let me know if its alcohol soluble.

I saw some over at art friend the other day, and I asked the guy for alcohol based dyes.

But he told me none avaliable.

So I'm not sure if the dylon is alcohol soluble.

If it is, it'd be great.

currently i don't have any to test out till the next body.

why don't you try it and let me know instead? ;) dylon pack of dye is only $3.80 and a bottle of spirit is around $2

anyways... here's the neck.

Mahogany neck, macassar ebony fretboard, abalone dot marker, baritone scale, super soft V profile. Dyed the mahogany portion with Colron Rosewood dye. Will probably finish with a few thin coats of dull lacquer or Colron Danish Oil and buff with bee wax.

I would if I had some right now.

Would only be able to pick up some after the weekend when I'm less packed from work.

should be a regular usa custom guitars baritone neck price but I paid an upcharge of 20 or 30 USD for the macassar ebony and a bit more for the abalone inlays. shipping of USD50+

Yes pretty much, however, water based dyes can only be used on maple tops.

Unless you do not grain fill beforehand.

The dyes will only work well on bare wood.
You'd have to grain fill/seal after the dye is on for other woods besides maple.

wayne1991, no you don't soak the whole guitar body in!

just mix around 300-500ml of hot water with one pack of the dye and use that solution to brush or rub in with a cloth.

I use those disposable plastic dessert containers for dilution and storage.

haha.. ok, that makes sense..
sorry to hijack thread, i think im gonna diy a guitar real soon, already got neck and body already, just wondering where do u usually get ur hardwares from? thanks in advance, any online shops in particular?

lightice, i've grown accustomed to "visible" grain on painted bodies so now i don't bother at all fill any grains. never did want an ultra kilat PRS'ish hang on the wall inside a glass cabinet finish.

wayne1991 , no problems hijacking this thread.

I started it so that others who wanted to do something like this can obtain information on how to do something like this locally.

What we read often online is all very USA-centric in terms of parts, hardware, paint etc.

What do you mean by hardware? Hardware as in hardware like hammer, drills, orbital sander etc or guitar parts hardware?

Usually those nice kilat-kilat diy marts in shopping centers make browsing a treat but their prices are pretty steep. Spend an hour there and you'll learn quite a bit of stuff.

I buy my stuff from various sources and all my hardware are acculmulated thro the years. Too many stuff.

Guitar hardware thesedays I'd normally turn to Guitarfetish. Though their parts may be so called "import" aka korea/taiwan etc but they have what i want and their prices are right.

search online for guitarfetish.

tuners i'd get from Davis cos i totally love them Planetwaves and they are very well priced. You probably can get quite a bit of stuff from Davis,

EDIT: we're talking about the same site and i've been recommending that site. Totally trustworthy I'd probably bought more than USD500 worth of stuff from them already.

nice neck. bro r u gonna hve the headstock & neck refiniished? U mite need some mahogany coloured wood filler to level out before refinishing.

The Madagascar ebony is sweet. Adds that exotic touch that compliments the body I'd keep it that way instead of staininng black like most manufacturers do witth ebony boards.

Heh now Im thinking of getting an ebony board fopr my carved top....

so care to share what the hardware will be? Gold will certainly go wit the mahogany / ebony neck... Bill Lawrence pups I'm sure .... Just got my qtr edition of stewmac -U mite wanna check out the new gotoh 6 in line 510 locking tuners.

Last but not least IF you decide to have a "Fender decal" - I will PM U my UK contact who has such decals in chroome finish (not the normal decal with metalic paint but chrome) . Years back I had stock of abalone and MOP fender headstock stuff for inlay but that acebue has dried up...this is of course if U go tat route...

if not ... how about: TeleEd - SIGNATURE SERIES

i say DON'T put that fender decal.. really.. after all it's not a fender, it's your own built guitar, you won't want the credits to go to fender, fender did not pay you to build that guitar and give them the glory, fender are rich enough to sue you for any stupid reason they find eg "oh that is a bad imitation of our latest custom shop model that we've not revealed to the public"...

Lastly, you want that guitar to be known as your guitar and not a fender right? I say put ur nickname there or your company's name there! That should be so much better! :D

Ed.. really love the work you are doing there man.. damn jealous.. damn feeling bad as normally i post my work i don't share my sources 100%.. ya da man! Maybe the next time i should share more.. me too doing some guitars now.. but shhh.. wait till it's done.. and nope, it's not as expensive as yours :P I am ala al cheapo~
