Earth Hour

i think earth hour is crap as well. no doubt it raises awareness. but does it WORK? will it result in anything? or will it breed a group of people who think it's fashionable to pretend to be 'green'? .

Nothing will work until you keep trying and trying. If this fails, im sure they will try again to convey the message.

And of course, turning off the lights for one hour wont make much of a difference. But the real aim is to bring about awareness. It's more of a long run thing.

+1 on ocean.
think of it this way
if theres an earth hour like every month or sth, soon there will be a diff.

well, everything has to start somewhere shinobi =] i'm malaysian and we don't have much rules against environmental wrongdoings as well. for us its more of laws that are there but enforcement that is busy doing other things or even accepting bribes.

but that doesn't give us an excuse for not wanting to do anything about our environment right? who knows after earth hour, governments will start doing their part. in some countries they do. u look at european countries and they are so far ahead of us when it comes to protecting their environment. but if u went back in time, i'm pretty sure u would see that they too started from a humble beginning of merely wanting to do something about it =]

earth hr is for the future la. create awareness now so in the long run it might be better..
think of our children. if now we 'havoc',in future they suffer

The real impact of turning off our lights tonight for an hour will only be known after 9 months..... :)

dont think this is gonna raise much awareness in the long term.

Remember live earth in 2007?
were any of you using less electricity after watching that and MAINTAINED the habit till present? or did you just heck care after 2-3 weeks?

I did. I even signed up at earthhour.org. I don't care whether it works (well, actually I do) but my main reason for doing so is to show that I care and I am willing to sacrifice something to make this Earth a better place.

tim098: Is it that you don't think it'll make a difference, or do you not care about the planet? It's only 1 hour. You're not sacrificing much by doing so. Not assuming that you don't care, but this 'shit' about global warming is real. We can feel the temperatures rising.

In fact, in the daytime, I switch off my lights too because it's bright enough already without the lights on. I just open my windows and air up my room, and ta-da, no need to switch on the lights.

aye =]

hifi_killer: it makes a diff to those who pick the message up. i for one started a recycling pile and choose to use shorter driving routes with tol booths rather than longer ones that skip them. just the little i can do for my dear planet =]

You signed up?. Maybe I should try it too. Thank you for doing so. I did too and it feels good to realise what will happen without electricity and not to take it for granted.

Yup, I do that too. Oh! Don't forget to switch the power outlet when your not using appliances and when you go to sleep. It will help too. ;)

i switched off the lights,my fan,and my laptop power supply.

10 mins left, my mum came and scold me..
she asked me what am i doing in the dark and not studying.
and she switched in the lights.
niceee....:(

Haha. I had a rather 'opposite' experience. Sometime around 9pm, I went to dispose of my beer can and out of habit, switched on the light so I could see. My mom reminded me, after all it was I who told them about the Earth Hour thing in the first place. Switched it off immediately.

zhaf93: Doing your part for the earth and that happens. That sucks man!. Did you explain to her why you were doing so?

EugeneSmasher: Lucky your mum 'reminded' you. My mum 'reprimanded' me for switching on the lights when she thinks it's not necessary. Haha

I am so against this because unless there are people who actually go on living like this for the rest of their lives after 'Earth Hour', this is completely useless.

I also quite dislike how most people assume that global warming is caused by mankind.

And pretentiously making ourselves 'feel better' about ourselves in the sense that we are saving the earth by turning off your lights for one hour is not going to do scrap.

I don't know. Some ppl are sceptical.. I'm neutral actually. But at least some ppl do give a damn about earth and tried to do something albiet small. Rather than being bochup abt the situation. millions of ppl ard the world doing it does have a significant effect though. At least this earth hour thing is better than that save the earth concert that waste more energy and left more garbage.

tim098: while his analogy of logic towards global warming may be a little naive, the fact is that the earth is warming up.

its very subjective to measure causes like these that only have the ability to bring awareness to ppl to having a measurable goal or outcome. the 1 billion thing this year is just a number target to aware and inform at least 1 billion ppl.

after that it really is up to us. the ppl living. not an organisation or an event.

how many can we convert? nobody knows. how many ppl's lives change? nobody knows.

but, are ppl converted? definitely. are ppl's lives changed? definitely.

the question really is this. take earth hour out of the picture and ask urself these 2 questions.

1. do u believe the earth needs its people to change its living ways?
2. what are you doing about it? personally as well as to the ppl and community around u?

if ur answer to 1 is no, then there's no point in you posting anything here. you're most probably part of the worlds population that believes if the world is dieing, then there's nothing i can do about it.

if ur answer to 2 is effectively doing more for your community that what earth hour is doing, then pls offer up some constructive critism instead of just shooting down such a humble cause as this =]
