ear damage?

i went for the muse concert and my hearing became abit muffled through the next day.

anyway something to think about, hearing loss is inevitable. every human being will experience slight hearing loss as they age, due to ambient noises. prolonged listening to loud music merely accelerates the process.

I have a friend who played the bells in a marching band when she was in secondary school. You know bells - in marching bands, they are held upright next to the ears.

She's 40 now, and suffering from hearing loss in one ear - the ear that the bells are closer to. She's literally hearing ringing bells now.

For musicians, ears are one of the crucial assets we have. We have to protect them. Not everybody is a Beethoven. We lose our hearing, we may lose everything pertaining to music.

I had an experience like that before..totally freaked me out..it was due to jamming loudly in a small area...totally regretted it..nowadays after jamming even when I get back home to listen to music..I'll just lay it at low volume and let the ears rest...or sometimes I just don't listen to music for a whole day..

yo .. sharing my experience

when i was listening music using normal headphone, it was max cuz i can't hear the music due to environment noise (bus, road, train, etc) and this is what causes ur hearing to be impaired, when u don't realize that the music is blasting to ur ears ...

when i change to in-ear earphones that goes to the ear canal and block (literally and practically) all the noise from outside .. i realize that i can't put the volume like i did before .... from 100% it went to 20-30% and it's LOUD enough ..... actually it's soft compared to the 100% using the normal earphone. But listening to it in 20-30% is safer than blasting it 100% using normal earphone. My earphone was a sennheiser, very good earphone i must say, for 128 ... but GAWD i slammed one of the earphone so now it's impaired ... lolx .. need to buy another one ... am aiming for Shure's earphone....

about jamming .... whatever room and whenever i jam with my rock band (take note ... rock band ... lolx!) .... i will definitely use ear protector ... it's a must for me .... i dun wan to lose my hearing at any cost ...... (i'm a keyboardist) .. and yes, if u're not use to it .... it can affect ur playing, but the bottom line is ... get USE to it .. and save ur ear =)...

ciaos! all the best!!

I use ER20s when in an amplified situation, with amps, monitor wedges etc. Esp when playing stuff requiring lotsa hi-hat splashing - that's the stuff that kills my ears.

Try this. This site allows you to measure equal loudness contours--the frequency response of your own ears. Might need a set of closed headphones or in-ears for this to work best.

I'M NOT A ROCK MUSICIAN. AM I STILL AT RISK?
Studies have found that sound levels within orchestras can reach peaks of 130dBA. In addition, individual instruments can produce extremely loud sound intensities exceeding 90dBA, particularly the brass and percussion sections.

Think this can’t happen to you? Consider this: Just 15 minutes of exposure to high-decibel noise or music can cause permanent hearing loss. That’s right. Permanent. Research indicates that 30% of rock musicians have a measurable hearing loss. Classical musicians fare even worse – with up to 52% experiencing hearing impairment. The good news? Hearing loss can be prevented — and that’s what we’re going to be talking about. So listen up! And read on.

am using in-ears isolation thinggies too. i think it's abt 60-70% effective at blocking out outside noise. and the good thing is i listen at a much lower volume with in-ears then with my previous headphones/earphones etc. and it's lightweight and comfortable too!

yeah,I definitely listen to my mp3 at a lower volume when using in-ears...

OMG! TRENT REZNOR IS PARTIALLY DEAF?! haha! I knew it! the music is just too loud to be "ear-safe"

its not really good to listen to music 24/7

some times u have to learn to listen to the silence... :D

no seriously, listen to enough good music and when u're listening to silence, music just plays in ur head... that's where u can start writing ur own stuff... :p

This is something we should all pay attention to.

If you check out industrial noise studies you will find that once the sound gets up to anywhere over 100dB the exposer time before your hearing will receive some damage is only aorund 1hour!.

Handphones and portable music players are also capable of producing levels higher than this so listening to your music loud for a prolonged period can and will damage your hearing.

It will be progressive so you prob wont really notice at first.

I have first hand experience of this as i spent 6 months with some serius hearing loss in my right ear... it was so bad that i could only use telephone on my left ear!

Lucky for me I attend a church where ppl get healed of all sorts of things quite regularly... PM me if you want to hear more about this

erm bsides ear plugs what can we use to reduce the volume?

i am a drummer btw.. and the ringing is gonna kill me someday...
