Hey, juat wanna ask, any fans of Duff Mckagan (GN'R, Velvet Revolver) here? I want to know his set up and how to get his sound or something similar to it? Thanks a lot in advance! :D

after a while you find that all his riffs follow practically the same patterns.

but they're nice la.

very trebly sound usually?

I think Duff is a very versatile bass player, his basslines are simple most of the time but very groovy, that's why he's my fav bass player. They do not follow the same pattern..

Anyway, from what I know, Duff uses the following equipment/set up. He usually uses a fender jazz special which is made in japan and more recently, he uses the fender aerodyne, which is also made in japan if i am not wrong. But his main bass is still the fender jazz special. For pickups, he uses Seymour Duncan hot stacks, the STKJ2B for the bridge. I am not sure what he uses for his neck pickups though. For amps, he uses Gallen Krueger. For effects wise, he uses the Yamaha SPX 90 for chorus and a MXR DI box. For strings, he uses Rotosound swing bass 66, .45 gauge. Hmm, that should be about it. The DI box plays a big part in getting the 'Duff' sound, seriously. Oh, I usually add more treble on the DI and less bass, but on the amp's eq, I add more bass and less treble to balance out. That's my preference :) Just play around and you can pretty much get it. I got more of his live sound rather than his studio sound. They sound a little different. I have yet to get a chorus pedal, not the yamaha one though. Prob a Boss.

I hope this helps. I am no duff sound engineer. Lol. Cheers! :p

Thanks amnesiac for your advice :) I do not own most of the stuff that you mentioned. In fact, I don't own any of them :( I do have a fender precision bass though, no where close to what duff is using. But that's ok, I think I will save up to get that MXR first or maybe change my pickups. Anyway, thanks for yer help bro! :D

you don't have to play exactly like duff or use his exact equipment and settings to learn from his playing style, lines and tone.

just mess around and try to get something similar, and use it to expand your own personal tone and style.

if everybody sounded like duff it would get boring after a while.
:D

hmm i'll be looking at this thread cos i wanna know too.

vegecrackers, i bet u find duff damn good looking right thats why u're a fan

aaah yes im a fan of duff! but not a fan of velvet revolver. kehkeh. catchy bassline. one of my fav bassists. not that i take note of many bassists though.

Jazz bass tone with pick and boosted treble should you close.

Hes pretty under-rated in guns, dig his groove and his tone is really sick a times. One of the most groovy bassist in the glam era.

But I dig his sound in Guns much more than his with VR

If duff's riffs practically follow the same pattern, then wow, every song with a verse chorus bridge style is practically the same pattern too....

the songs are structured, of course have to follow the same pattern wad.

Im a big fan of Duff..in fact the whole original lineup in GnRs Appetite for Destruction..As a guitarist, i personally feel his bass riffs are really unique and compliments Slashs and Izzys guitar riffs..such as in Mr brownstone (which is one of favs), without the basslines, it wouldnt be so groovy..He isnt the most technically gifted bassist but he makes up for it being consistent and his riveting edge in fill-ins.

i thought duff uses his own fender signature bass? not sure what are the specs of it exactly though

Actually, he uses a Japan Power Jazz Bass which is basically a P pickup at the neck and Jazz pickup at the bridge. It's been discontinued the last I heard.
