DS-1 vs. Tubescreamer

compare for wad.. fret not!
im a user of the ds1->ts9 combo,
cept that my ts9 is the analogman one, and the ds1 is a MIT one modded by edwin at wmum, im using the ds1 as a booster, and my tone has never been sweeter, however on this topic, i think that there is never a nirvana of tone, cos when u start thinking of having TWO ODs together instead of a ds1 into a ts9, its a whole new ball game. woot.
mid boost? i like! hahaha cos im using a tele now, and i like those riffy sounding chord work kinda thing that works well with what i have now.
oh well, thats my 2cents worth 8)

Heavenscloud, this is your first dirt pedal, or one of your first dirt pedals?

If so, just grab either one, based on the descriptions and if you can, from what you hear when you get to play them.

Its all in the journey of a guitarist. Either of them, DS1 and TS7, are cheap too. Just grab 1 of them, 2nd hand or something, get s taste of it.

Just don't... fall for fictatious claims on what a ds1 (or ts9) can do.

Yeah actually I agree with that. Though either pedals are different in character, both are considered bread and butter to most people. So even if you don't like, reselling them arent a problem. It might be more worthwhile to get a ds-1 since its cheaper to begin with, plus with the mods, you might get what you want. Ts-808 is quite mild if you don't pair it with anything (Ts-9 too), so if you need more gain, a modded ds-1 sounds like a better option. However give the ts-7 a try, it has an added lead switch for more gain, which IMO is actually a pretty decent boost!

mellapong, I haven't actually tried a/bing with a keeley ds1/ts808 & JH (I see no point to use a ds-1 stock), but from what I can remember from my two setups, the JH is more versatile because of the fact that you can change the contour and Eq more drastically (on the hyde side) than the ds1-808 combi. Personally, I think there is a slight difference in tone between both of them, I think you might get a slightly smoother tone with the combi, but with the variation the JH gives, plus its actually cheaper than buying both combi (almost 400 or more together!!!), its a better buy. They are all essentially the same circuit. People usually mod from TSwhatever to TSwhatever so what mod are you talking about? Or you just want a 'modded' pedal?

Well essentially if I open it up, breathe on it, then you have the blueark 'breath' mod. Sounds exactly the same but has extra mojo.

I can mod your car:

wrong its Zhng my CAR!

anyway i gt a mod i can do for you la. im doing it cheap cuz im new.

its called the snot mod.

basically i put my pi sai on the transistor, gives it slight more dirt and a spongier attack. PM me if you want it done. :D

hey Shredcow it's my first dirt pedal la, or at least my first single pedal. Actually i'm planning on getting one at the Swee Lee sale, but confirm kenna snatched away one since I would be overseas on 1st July. Is a stock DS-1 that bad? Heard of Keeley ones but have no clue on their prices and their reliability.

You can get a 2nd hand stock DS1 for about $50. You can perform the simplest of mods, which is to get rid of the sillycon diodes and put in a 3mm red LED, then change out one capacitor. This basically gets rid of the thinness, makes it fat and chunky and lots more clean headroom.

Or you can get someone who knows what he's doing to do it for you for like maybe $30, which still amounts to $80, cheaper than a brand new DS1.

For the tubescreamers if you want the old ts808 tone, but don't wanna spend money on a overpriced ts808 reissue, get a ts9 (which is also overpriced i think) or a ts7 and have someone mod it to ts808 specs.

If you have no idea what the mods can do for you, then I have no idea why you wanna mod.

You can say, 'its too thin, can you make it fatter?'
Yes.

You can say, 'there's too much gain, can you reduce it?'
Yes.

You can say, 'can you make it sound better?'
No.
I can make it sound different.
