Drums Instructor

Hi all,
I have been learning drums at Yamaha for about 6 months (Group course) now. I like the drums syllabus in Yamaha but I prefer individual lesson and Yamaha does not provide individual course after working hours (6pm).
I'm currently looking for drums instructor for individual lessons. Any recommendations? Thanks.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. would appreciate some advice on getting a drum instructor as well :)

what kinda instructor to hire depends on what you aim to get out of learning drumming, and your budget. some just wana be proficient enough to drum for church or form a band while others wana properly pick it up. i even have students saying they wana drum like lars ulrich that's why they're taking lessons.

yamaha's decent enough, but one problem is it doesn't educate you in how to play in a band. not good if that's what you plan to do.

Thanks for all the feedback.
Yamaha drums syllabus is good but not very useful for practical jamming. I have joined Yamaha group course for 6 months now but I'm still not very proficient in playing "live"...I wondered is it my problem?
In a group class, I couldn't hear my drumming very clear as well and my Yamaha instructor is quite "cocky"...
I have checked with sweelee and they told me to contact this drums instructor Tony Zee...anybody knows him? Is he good?

tony zee is the mentor of our local drumGod jummy lee!

but his fees might cost a little.

jimmy is charging 50 per 45mins that i know.

i heard that tony zee is very good and he used to wrote the drum textbook for yamaha when he was still there. that's why i heard. so dun go and quote me!

yamaha instructors are damn cocky and they are not devoted to teaching u.. half an hour lesson and they spend 20 mins talking to their frens,
walking around outside the studio. anyway, just dun go. unless u know the teacher well.. i've seen some really devoted teachers who stays in the room til lesson ends.. not drum teachers of cos.. they are so proud. i asked my teacher when i can learn double bass.. then he said, "u want to learn triple bass also can lah!" anyway, i didn't get a chance to learn!!! learning on my own now. and using guitar pro to help me sometimes.

To lepids: Who's ur yamaha teacher?...I have this feeling that we share the same teacher cos he always speaks in that manner. Thanks for ur advice.

ehs, u just say the name lah. i forgot what's his name but if u tell me, i will remember.. anyway, yamaha also not much drum teachers.. and i know 3 of them.

Hensen Beng? Haha. He was my teacher for about 6-7 months, then I gave up his useless lessons. Going to approach drummer from band "wiierd jazz" to coach me. After all, he's my friend. Maybe can get discount :p

yamaha teachers

I share everyone's sentiment regarding the teachers at yamaha, esp HB and James. However, I was coached by a Mr Lim Wee Guan for 3 years, and he would always spend the entire 30 mins playing together with me, giving me more ideas of fills/5 or 7 stroke rolls/rudiments/solos etc.

Therefore, though the attitude and teaching quality of most of these 'music educators' are questioned, I'd like to highlight that not all of them are as bad as described.

It's been 4 years since I quit, but I wouldn't have improved as much on my own (esp in triplets) if I didn't take up the yamaha syllabus (though some parts are redundant) or absorb from Mr. Lim's playing.

Well, tt's my 3 cents worth... Black drummers rock!

I know Mr Lim's teaching style in yamaha...I personally think that he is a very good instructor...very patient and all but he is not my drum instructor. My instructor is James and he is very cocky, condescending and hell impatient. I agree that not all yamaha instructors are bad...some are very experienced and good...I suggest that newbies to yamaha should try to find out who are their instructors before signing up for a timeslot.

james is cocky fella.. my teacher is james.. now i remember. he go in go out of the studio.. i sians 1/2 one. i kana scolded til i want to cry liao lah. basket lor.. mine is private. he spent 10 mins scolding me one time. moreover, he always change schedule one. i hate this lah. another teacher i dun quite like is anthony.. solo solo then teach class. james also like that.

one thing i dun quite like is that james likes to do duet with me.. means i play the beat in the textbook and he will do a different beat.. people watching outside the studio might be impressed with james' skills and want him to teach.. then when u hire him, actually u dun quite like to duet with him. i saw that he was better than anthony.. that's why i changed teachers. but he's just too proud..

i think self taught is one of the best. i learn faster that way. just use the drum textbooks and just play everything there... don't know can ask people around or use guitar pro to help.. :D

for newbies hor, u go outside of the studios and look around at the teachers.. if u can stand cockiness and teachers who go in and go out of studios, u can try james lah. otherwise, they said mr lim is a good teacher. u can try. i can suggest u learn to read, then later quit. hehe.. waste money. one month bout 100 bucks average. u just think lah.. one year u can get one pearl export set liao lei. save another more year, u can get a electronic kit if u are staying in flats. practising is the way to improve. :D

But i think that said, if you can find a good teacher it will DEFINITELY help. You'll have a motivator and someone you can ask anything you don't know.

good teacher is one good way of motivation...

my source of motivation is from drum solos and live concerts.. :D they spur me to practise more!! :D

My instructor was James too. He's a morale killer man... He called me a 'show off'. And the truth is, I never ment to show off. Drumming is just my passion. I know I'm not good. That's why I go there to learn. You see... I don't have a drumset at home and I can't afford one. I used to come early for class so that i can play the drums. Then he insulted me in front of the whole class. A lot of students also did that until he makes fun of them.

can't agree more. he should stop playing drums.. a musician cannot have this kinda of attitude.
half an hour lesson, he showed me his favourite videos of buddy rich for 15 mins. i already watched those videos before..(because videos are partly source of learning).. sians 1/2..
