when i got my first electric guitar, i was into bands like helmet, quicksand, handsome, smashing pumpkins and far. and these bands mainly played on drop-D tuning,and now, im still writing songs on drop-D tuning (for march12 and dearxarson). ocassionally id do so too for shamejoannshame, but as of the moment SJS has been writing more songs on normal E.
another trick that u guys maybe can try is to drop-d and use a capo on the 2nd or 4th fret. (i think i just released the secret for m12's songwritin. haha. but no worries.)
to be honest, i suck at playing on normal tuning as im so used to drop-d.
drop-d is useful for playing power chords, thats true, but not neccesarily relegated to just power chord stuff. be innovative!
