Dream Theater - OCTAVARIUM

I've got the entire album from a fren off the web..just a few heavy songs..the rest..are just....sigh...

oh i love the album when dream and day unite. but i find octavarium shit when compared. they arent even similar. dt has moved onto sold out ground. sadly.

I won't as far to say that they sold out. Why now? Not that they not popular for metal band. I think we have to respect that they will play what they want to play. It's their music. One thing I realise now is that almost every album of theirs has its own following. I hate 6DOIT but there are people who will put it as their fav. Of course I missed AIW and Awake era but this album... may need more listening.

well azacamis i guess ure rite. hope i didnt offend any dt fans. im a huge dt fan myself. just tt i kinda prefer their atmospheric style in songs such as metrop pt 1 and pull me under. but somehow i cant really appreciate much electronica n stuff. plus i love their strange time signatures. kinda lacking in octavarium but i guess if u do sumthing for too long ull get bored so i guess maybe this album for them was a refreshing change.

so... er... anyone seen it in stores yet? since it's june 7th, well for us folks who hasn't downloaded it off the net...

Some of the reviews abt DT's new album

"Dream Theater
"Octavarium"
Atlantic Records
Release Date: June 7, 2005
By Dave Schwartz davybass@dabelly.com

Wow, this is different! I swear that somewhere in the bowels of Atlantic Records there is an executive laughing his ass off. Someone must be the blame for this! Of course I say that only half jokingly, but let me explain. The media release for the up coming Dream Theater album, "Octavarium," contains five songs. Of the five songs, none could ever be called typical Dream Theater. The first, "I Walk Beside You," at 4:30 is exactly what our mysterious record exec might call radio-ready. No guitar solo? A catchy almost pop vocal? Under five minutes? How can this be possible? Is this really Dream Theater?

I had many questions so I went to the mountain and I asked John Petrucci. "Did you get the five song sampler?" he questioned. "Yes, I think you’ve got a slightly slanted view of our next record!" I mop my brow as I’m reassured that "Octavarium" also contains epic pieces of music with soaring guitar solos, expansive melodies and counter melodies ripe with orchestration. In short, Dream Theater music.

Wait a minute, did Petrucci confirm my conspiracy theory? Is there a record exec laughing his ass off? Is this some kind of ploy to fatten the DT fan base? I guess you’ll have to read my interview with Petrucci in the July issue of DaBelly!

Okay, it’s time to repeat what I’ve said on every Dream Theater review I’ve written. This isn’t anything like the last album!"

Maybe its a marketing ploy by DT.. Who knows.. Majority of the reviews gave enormous praises... maybe those songs/clips that ppl dloaded are some edited version of the original songs...

Anybody got it yet??

ok, i admit, i am guilty of dLing a few tracks 1st, out of curiosity, i've neva been a DT fan, i mean i like glass prison, dat was the only song i like frm all the previous albums, but this album i guess will really force me to get a copy quick, i am a huge electronica fan as well, so, after hearin the combination of electronica wif DT, i was ecstatic, nonetheless, DT delivered it! sorry if i offend any1 but if this is the direction DT will be goin, i fully support it, itz personal preference afterall.

Electronica?? lol DT wont even go there trust me....
Anyway, since almost everyone mentioned abt their favourite DT albums, i will mention mine as well. But i only have 5 of their albums so i'll order them in terms of my preference instead lol

1. Scenes from a Memory
2. 6 degrees of Inner Turbulence
3. Awake
4. When Dreams and Day Unite
5. Train of Thought

I have "Change of Seasons EP", "Liquid Tension 1 & 2" and "An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess" as well but those were side projects (in the case of Change of Seasons it was just an EP) so im not ranking them. Dont get me wrong, these albums are great.....check them out!!!

As for DT's keyboardists over the years......i definitely liked Kevin Moore's ideas and contribution to the band.....Derek Sherinan's style is more rockish but nothing compares Rudess' style and compositions.

For me SFAM is the greatest album in terms of music composition. Never have i heard a rock band pulling together various rock styles and gelling together as one band such as DT in that album. Also, in that album Rudess definitely showed and proved the true potential of a keyboardist existing in a rock band.

As for 6 degrees, DT went more symphonic and they are exploring even more styles outside of rock. They gelled traditional rock instruments with the backrop of orchestral sounds, classical style and even a lil bit of jazz and contemporary music. I mean, which other rock band can do that and do it in one LONG song?? It was like one musical rollercoaster ride with good storytelling elements and in my opinion, it turned out well. It's all a matter of preference really. That's why some like it, some dont.

Train of Thought didnt do it for me.....It's mostly heavy.....not that i dont like heavy rock but DT went one dimensional with the album that's why. There were certain parts of certain songs that i liked tho....but that's it.

Yea, that was one helluva post......but before i end, i would like to say this: John Myung is a very underrated bassist.....in my opinion he's a bass workhorse!! lol
