Dream Theater - OCTAVARIUM

DT

I agree with Cavett, these two albums are the best to date:

1. Images & Words (2nd album)
2. Metropolis Pt II: Scenes From a Memory (5th album)

Images & Words is probably the best album to date with original keyboardist Kevin Moore in lineup; too bad he left, if not the DT sound would sounds mellower. After Moore left, the DT sound seems harder and harder after each album.

Metropolis Pt II: Scenes From a Memory is the album where
Jordan Rudess join force to DT. This album bares some resemblance
to Pink Floyd and Queen, you'll hear to obvious Jordan Rudess presence with his piano attack.

Yet to hear
7. Train of Thought (7th album)
8. Six Degress of Inner Turbulence (6th album)

Didn't Rudess gave DT a new direction ?
Kind of stop listening to DT after Kevin Moore left, an intellectual musician.
Check out: www.chromakey.com

For what I remember for the launch of Six Degress of Inner Turbulence , it was promoted in their website to ask fans to pre-order the albums to push it to number one. But it only hit Top40 in the album chart.

DT is still a good rock band with virtuoso players.

Aha, thanks. Gotta check them out soon. Anw, today I saw one of their albums the track listing... got Led Zeppelin songs like The Song Remains the Same and The Rover. They did covers? :?

That CD u saw was their Change of Seasons EP which includes a live set of them playin nothin but covers which they did for fun.. And yeah they LOVE doing covers... My fav covers that DT did would have to be Perfect Strangers and Master Of Puppets...

I beg to differ. I would consider Awake one of their best releases. LOTS of heavy guitar and melodic solos, with a beautiful ballad 'space-dye vest', to close the album.

no offence but i thought the singing on master of puppets is horrible. I like their cover medley cause of "achilles last stand" great song.

i second that.

and i dislike the keyboardist after moore, before rudess. he could be half the reason DT went commercial with falling into infinity.

Lol~! Honestly I cant stand James singing live... He totally lost it eversince Falling To Infinity era.. A great live cd, Once in a Livetime was ruined thanks to him.. Though Live in Budokan he seems to be gettin it back slightly.. Just hope Octavium will see DT unleashed the f**kin fury~!!

haha! this guy is Derek Sherinian, used to play with Alice Cooper.
A Berklee graduate.

I wonder how such event can happen to a musician when a band finds a better player to replace him. According to DT website, Derek was fired !
But what I read from initial stories is Derek didn't want to continue to play in DT, he left and Rudess joined. Now this is the actual fact, just like the Beatles fired 1st drummer Pete Best !

Sad...

+1 to the comments on LaBrie. I always thought he sounds awful live. I wonder why the rest are keeping him in the band, when they can find another singer to form the ultimate technical band.

derek sherinian looked damn gay in the vcd I had.

The main reason Falling to Infinity was commercialised was because the recording company and the producers wanted it to be so they could make money out of it... If u watched the 5 Years in a Livetime audio commentary, Portnoy said something that they themselves didnt like the direction of the album as most of the songs original versions had to be cut and shorterned by the producers.. Plus originally Metropolis Pt II was supposed to be a song by itself to be placed in Falling to Infinity but luckily the idea got scrapped if not we would not be getting SFAM... Though I shudder to think what would happen to DT if Portnoy quitted the band which he nearly did...

Derek was initially supposed to be a sessionist for DT's gigs as they didnt want to cancel the tours after the news of Kevin leaving the band...

Rite after Kevin left, DT went on to audition for a new keys player and was shortlisted with two guys, Jordan Rudess and Jens Johansson(Stratovarius).. So they went with Jordan BUT Jordan was bz with Dreggs back and couldnt commit then so they had to hire a sessionist for the tours.. But after awhile Derek hit it off with the band and thats when they decided to hire him full time..

So fast forward a few yrs, Jordan was free again after his full time commitment with Dreggs ended and since the LTE sessions went off so well, Mike and JP ask Jordan if he would still like to join DT full time.. Jordan said yes and Derek was "release from the band"...

But imagine if they had choosen with Jens.. We would have a Power Metalish DT I think... Hmmm....

yeah, this normally what happens - the record company wants the band to be a hit single band !!!

just like what Pink Floyd did - 1981 Another Brick in the Wall

However DT wont be DT if James wasnt singing IMHO... As much as the virtuosity of the band goes, its his voice that makes ppl recognise that its DT.. Plus his studio work is amazing though...

vocalist

not many established band change singers,
normally after change in singer, the band collapse.

vocalist connects with the audience?

Exception case:
Van Halen - Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth 1986
Toto - Bobby Komball left after successful TotoIV album; new singer recruited with vocal duties shared by Steve Lukather.
Pink Floyd - Roger Waters left with David Gilmore taking over singing duty.
Chicago - Pete Cetera left, band with new vocalist still hit Top on charts.

Actually DT did change their singer to be where they r now...

Charlie Dominici out - James LaBrie in...
