dono leh..

BB King knew nuts about theory but he's one of the most respected blues guitarist today.

But still, there's only 1 BB King ...

Personally i feel that theory will help VERY MUCH. Learning technique and theory isn't two seperate paths but they are intertwined very much .. you learn a theory, you apply it technically ... you learn. So it's a win-win situation.

You can learn theory and learn your techniques and play songs at the same time. Theory will give you a better understand of how other bass players work and how they shape their lines. If not, you can just be a copy cat bassist who plays covers and comes up with basic lines for originals.

1st post in Bass!

I've got this to say about theory.

It helps.

Theory has always proven beneficial for the musician.

I would think of Theory are the grammer of the Music Language. It never hurts to know the why & how of what you are speaking. In fact, you tend to gain a better understanding of the working of music.

To put aside theory and ignore it would be a rash act... its like putting on a blindfold. Sure you still can play. Sure you're still able to make music. It can be alright - you can survive without Theory but...

Some avenues will be shut off from you. E.g.

- You will have issues working for a project that demands sight-reading of score
- You will have issues explaining your music (ever gotten sick of the "I dunno, I played and it came out that way" reasoning of your fave heroes?)
- You might end up being less "creative" in that, you wouldn't know how to develope a musical idea.

So on so forth.

Music is an entity that is open to a lot of things but to go to one extreme... sometimes, its quite rash no?

slutgarden: billy sheehan knows loads about theory dude go buy his books and dvds..but i mean he don't really talk much about stuff IMO you don't need to know like all those italian words violinist, pianist etc. ,names of the modes(but he shows you how to play them), etc..

i just learn the stuff that i feel would help me musically like scales, chord theory and stuff. Scales and chord theory to me are really important, maybe they'll help you, go explore a lil

I agree....I suggest you actually listen to billy sheehan and then comment...because he knows his theory and technique very very well....his album has strong jazz influences goin on....

music theory is very important....so is free spirited music...like many before...i reiterate...find a balance....learn the theory when and where u can apply it....otherwise someday ur gonna be jammin wid someone...and they'll say lets have a 12 bar blues progression...and its kinda shameful if u dunno what that is...music theory isnt all abt staff notation...
