Does music help to promote academic excellence?

Is there any scientific explaination to this?

I read that it helps to develop the right side of the brain and stuff like that. But if this is so , then every SOFTie here should either be in top secondary schools , be studying in a JC or even studying in a prestigious university both local and abroad....

Another thing is whenever I'm studying at home (YES I'm a nerd) , I will always have the urge to activate my windows media player and play some of my favourite songs. When I'm studying outside , I will have the urge to switch on my mp3 player and study at the same time because I can never study without listening to music and I'm serious. I was wondering whether is it feasable to listen to music and study at the same time?

What are the pros and cons of it?

Well I know of a friend's brother who listens to AC/DC all night long to study and is now a doctor.... :p

Cheers

it all still depends on one's intelligence.

maybe it does helps in certain ways;
in whatever we do, natural instinct and intelligence
plays a part but hard work always count and it gives
80% of the result.

when I was young I'm good in music, it comes naturally
but not too good in school. So maybe not necessarily
music achievement brings academic results.

My experience is music opens up your mind and probably
exposure to pop culture change one's perception and perpective?

I dunno. I never really study anyway. Then if I turn on music, I would end up looking for more music but for tedious stuff like math, it does help me.

I study with music all the time with earphone. It helps to cut out "external disturbances". I dont think there is a relation btw music and intelligence.

But there are some musicians that are smart. Like Brian May of Queen, he has a Double Degree in Physics and Maths. And the rest of the Queen members are also degree holders. The lead singer of Franz Ferdinand was a IT Lecturer in a Uni. Sting was a English teacher. Almost all the members (except Jonny Greenwood)of Radiohead has a degree as well.

I can NEVER study with music on. My entire soul is sucked away by the music, ok exaggerating. But I'll like listen to it subconsciously and I seem to be reading but the words don't go in. That's why I'm pretty amazed by people who can study to loud music.

My sentiments alike. :)

Hmm, I listen to music when I study, if not it would be too boring to do so! My combination is all maths-related so I guess it's okay because most of it is just routine or thinking, not much memorsing needed. However, I find it very hard to remember stuffs with the music on.

I don't think music really affects your academical capabilites. I think its the amount of work you put in.

Music probably does not help you academically. Those who say that children who can play the piano and stuff are really great at maths and all that, they're probably just really lucky...

well..when i need to do my project..or study for exams...my hi-fi is definately blasting when some rock or metal music...i know its weird...but it makes me concentrate more...i have done tis experiment...albums from system of a down..alter bridge..linkin park..muse...makes me concentrate better...haha..dunno why though...

when doing math sums,i think it helps if i listen to my MP3 player thru headphones but not so 4 languages...

i saw this article in the newspapers in 2003 about listening to music while studying...it states in wat way each genre helps n according to it,rap n hip-hop helps in concentration(i think it's true)...4got about the rest(back then i was a HUGE rap fan n hardly listened to other genres..hence the negligence... :( )

Sometimes i need to get high to solve additional maths questions..
so i always turn on black metal songs to help me up a bit.

wow you invoke the power of Satan to solve maths questions. Tt's cool.

Just kidding, black metal fans!

when there is music,i'll just hit the pen on the table as though they were drumsticks or headbang(but not to vigorously of course).

i was taught("learning styles") that the only music one should listen to is those Baroque(sp??) kind. Non-lyrical. Classical(??).
and the volume should be so low you just don't realise its on.

because it just help stimulate, or something like that, your brain.
