Does music help to promote academic excellence?

No, that's just something Yamaha says to get kiasu parents to enrol their kids. So far, it's worked.

Your words might have some meaning in it although I won't wanna jump to conclusions....

in my opinion i tink music helps u block out external disturbances when ur studying. however, wat ur listening to is also very important. i personally tink its crap when ppl study n listen to metal/punk/emocore etc or in general loud n noisy music. it totally distracts u frm ur work and makes u wana headbang or air guitar/drum to it. so usually end up nt studying.

bt when i study i listen to slow relaxing songs, for eg jiwang malay songs or classical music. n so far, it helps me get maths assignments n tutorials done so i tink it does work.

Sometimes i need to get high to solve additional maths questions..
so i always turn on black metal songs to help me up a bit.

wow you invoke the power of Satan to solve maths questions. Tt's cool.

Just kidding, black metal fans!

yeah, it does work psychologically. Imagine you think listening to black metal with the power of Satan can boost your braing thinking, and then you would be free of all mental blocks. Hence seems like you do/think beyond your potential.

music does help because it stimulates the brain in a certain way.

well for a start, alot (not all) musician are very smart and intelligent people. but we shouldn't mix this with their academic results because, alot of times, they don't do well not because they can't but their interest is not in the subject.

my 2cents

When I study in Poly/NTU last time,
the music I listen depending on what subject I study.

If I doing Tutorial or subjects required calculations (eg. Maths/Mechanics/Termo/Fluid/electrical...etc), I will listen to more noisy music (ie. Rock...etc).

If I doing reports, I will listen to some songs which not as noisy as rock but still have some beats and with lyrics (ie. Chinese/K-Pop/J-Pop...etc).

If I study on some subjects which need memorize (eg. material/manufacturing/ Laws/Econs/...etc), i will listen to Classical/Orchestra.

If I doing Design or study on some subjects that needs understanding/thinking (eg. design/analysis/...etc), I will listen to Piano/Instrumental/Soundtrack/New Age music.

What I did is repeating that paticular selected song for hours (even over night).

Hm...
so far i feel confortable with it, I have gone through all my studies with that method...

If what this thread is suggesting is factual ... then Slash should be Degree holder, Dave mustaine should have a PHD ... then Should it be Doctor Vai or Professor Clapton?

I believe musicians are intelligent people .... but one should never mistaken intelligence, streetwise and musical excellence together.

A straight Distinction student might be soring the skies in examinations ... but when it comes to actual situations in working environment, he might well be sitting duck. Hence academic excellence does not mean everything. Our very own CEO of Creative tech was a diploma student .... not a scholar. Besides IQ, you need EQ and AQ(adversity Quotient) to excel.

Hence i believe Music and academic excellence has nothing to do with each other. Even if you develop your brain playing Major scales ... doesn't mean you take less time figuring out mathematical fomulas ... it takes the same amount of delication .... so boys and girls .. get back to homework!! :)

yes. it does.
i was second last for the whole level in sec 1..
when i started listening to Marilyn Manson , i got 3rd in class

Errrr....actually yes. I've seen a lot of musicians who excel academically and yet can play music....

For me, music helped me alot because whenever I played the guitar, I felt like I wanna improve myself everytime i hold that instrument. So I spent alot of time on it. Then I realised that I could apply the same idea of improving myself, to studies OR maybe my whole LIFE. So, I started studying like im practicing guitar and guess what, I GOT 9th IN CLASS!!! :D

musicians as is songwriter , lyricist can be labeled as someone good in eng,lit or art as they are very creative with great imagination
