Does Learning The Tabla - Helps Us Improve Our Drumming ?

Thanks for the value info...I like it. It's really funny - 1st I don't know how it looks like Kekekeke, and my customer say he will buy one for me ..my God ! "He is the Chairman of Chittagong Chamber Of Commerce" there...

and...I thought the 2 things is going to be light...so funny...me wify can ask me "Whats a Tabla?"...I say "Small Drums"...hahahaha...lucky she did not buy

its quite widely available in singapore actually... there's one store in peninsula plaza, naveen enterprise or sth... they have some stock, but its not the HIGH LEVEL great deals sort, moderate cheaper stuff there... the shop's on the 2nd or 3rd floor

My apologies RD, I did not come into soft for a long time now.

Well, I think I would like to disagree with what Distorted Soul has said (no offence ya)... The tabla is readily available in Chennai, SOuth India. In fact, RD, you should have told me you wanted a set earlier lah. I just got 2 sets for myself. Why order from India instead of Singapore? Again, in contrast to wat D. Soul has said, buying the tabla in India is much cheaper. In India, the oookkkay set goes for about $230 SGD per set (including packaging). If you were to get it from Singapore, its at least 3.5 times that amount. I do not want to name any local shop...but you get the idea? Even though I may not know all the shops in Singapore that sell Indian intruments, you would be lucky if u can get a tabla cheaper or at the same price as above. A really good concert tabla set from india costs about SGD500++.

Having said this, I must agree with D. Soul that the best tablas are from North India or Bengal, and that transporting from India is a pain in the a**. The shop may play delay tactics or try some funny stuff. For me, my dad carried the two sets back for me. Cash and carry.. :)

just to add abit, i got a concert tabla from singapore for 500. haha exactly 500 and i kid u not. but oh well, its not really a shop, just a contact from my teacher. and it was first hand so yeah. haha no offence taken logan. great to see a fellow tabla player! :D

Wow....500...thats a good deal D.Soul.

I went to this shop in Little India, and they quoted me almost $900 SGD for a normal set of tabla! haha...

Give me your contact leh...saves me the trouble of having to order from India. My order got delayed by almost a month due to supply problems! :x
And, the shop that I order from in India demands half payment before they accept my order....but they are trustworthy lah...the same cant be said about all the shops there..

Yes RD, its the price in India. I think with packaging would be a bit more?

But its better to hand carry back lah. Much less troublesome...

I noe indian percussions have alot of odd-timing...so maybe if you can put those odd timing stuff on the drums, u will be untouchable!

yooo dudes, check out the john mclaughlin trio with trilock grutu on drums and percussions. grutu is suppose to be one of the best in the world at the tabla.
he's concepts are kinda different as in he doesn't see a time signature at all but rather the amount of notes tht can be placed in a bar.
they have an interesting way of counting 16th notes with the joints in their fingers pretty new stuff.
they teach u how to sing the rhythms first as well before u even touch a drum, we all shld do tht first i reckon gets ur brain use to the sounds and patterns

from inside not outside..

tabla i must say is one of the hardest instrument to master..well it requires techniques..i tried once n it was really hard..it has something to do with friction between ur hand n de drums.

Learning the drums will not improve ur rhythm automatically..it will not make u a better drummer..it will help in learning n appreciating other cultures rhythm(indian that is) you'll be amaze with their music history background!

rhythms..is all in you!! play from the inside..not only outside :)

have fun learning the tabla!!
