Do you stick to 1 sub-genre of metal all the time?

I don't have a large collection of music, I listen to anything that is lucky to fall into my hands. I never go around hunting songs unless I really have nothing to listen to.

That doesn't mean I don't have a preference for a certain style, or technique, or melody, rhythm, intro, chorus, etc. I may like a particular song, but I may also like only a few seconds of another. I may like a track from a band, but not an entire album or discography of that band.

My collection may be small, but I can honestly say I know a good tune when I hear one. I also know a good beat when I feel one. It can be heavy, devoid of any melody, but as long as it has the rhythm I'm good to go. It can be this or this or this or this or this.

And yet, there is always going to be this favourite's list, or this one band, that I will listen to everyday, or sometimes the only kind of music that I will have for a period of time. That, though, doesn't make me narrow, or an elitist, or a poser, and most importantly - not a less holier Metalhead/Metalfan than thou.

I had a brief conversation with this guy who was kinda frustrated with the choice of sub-genres of metal that i listen to. From Death, to Doom, to Power, then back to Death....
(This happened in a local store)
What he told me was that i wouldn't be listening to metal for long if i don't stay on and fix my ears to 1 sub-genre of Metal.
Well, to answer that, I'm still alive and kicking in the metal scene...

I find it ridiculous. If you're one who listens to metal, I think it's best for one to be open to all sub-genres of metal.
How can one appreciate music if you've not had exposure to a variety of styles?

I started listening to Metalcore, no joke. But I decide that maybe i should just 'widen my spectrum' and be open to the other genres. I tried Black Metal, occasionally enjoying it... Then moved on listening to other sub-genres.

What do you guys think of people who choose to listen to one sub-genre of metal and totally neglect the others?

I think its normal to jump around listening to other sub-genre of Metal, it be really bored if you just stick to one Sub-Genre, Me myself listen to

1)Black Metal
2)Symphonic Black
3)Death Metal

Its cool to explore other sub-genre rather than sticking to one all the time
