lack of government involvement, non-cooperative media, small circlejerking scene, xenophobic culture, not much of a social history in art.
also, not enough psychedelic drugs available. :) Is this for a paper?

Singaporeans are generally more apathetic and reserved compared to westerners.
and
we definitely do not want any government involvements in the arts scene other than for financial reasons.

the media is controlled by the forces of capitalism and the government, it is like this here, in the west and everywhere. You can blame them for that.

Punkd, i think your statement is WRONG!

Singapore local art scene is moving way much faster than the western counterpart. Why? You can see in SOFT. Where else do you see such a supporting community in term of music?

Quite true, but i need see in a big picture.
Cuz as we see, Western is getting more attention in terms of support .
Some are even known in Singapore.
In media and such.

Anyway, Thx admin for your view ^^
Much Appreciated .

What do you mean by western? There are loads of "western" countries with very different and distinct art scenes. If you want to compare "western" with "eastern" rather than Singaporean then you might have a more useful comparison, but even then it's pretty fatuous since many artists and art communities transcend ethnicity and geography.

There is no need to think on a local scale anymore. Plenty of artists use the internet as a tool to form communities, exchange ideas and get their work out there. Look at deviantArt, net labels or even myspace. Here it doesn't matter if you are Singaporean or Senegalese.

What do you mean by "moving faster"? How do you quantify the "speed" and which an art scene is "moving"?

That aside, the Singapore art scene is pretty healthy. Singapore films are well received in international film competitions. Singapore authors and play wrights are world class. There are large scale Art festivals, film festivals and writers festivals. There are great facilities like the Esplanade. There are a whole bunch of art schools.

hifi_killer is right, the problem is the apathy and disinterest among the general public. However that's not the gahmans fault it's the artist fault. They should be speaking to the highest common factor and reaching out to the common man. Artist only have themselves to blame if the public is not interested in their lofty intellectualism and self-serving navel gazing.

damn these artists and their pretentious artsy fartsy stuff! why can't they just keep it real and pander to the common man? art should be for the mainstream to enjoy and devour!

*shakes fists with rage*

=widdly

Hahaha ok thx dude (:

Much appreciated.
Cuz my group is doing about local art scene. & we needa do some comparison with Western.
We recently decided to put both Yes and No Areas.
So yeah thx dude ^^

forums are not such a good way to gather information. some more its a music forum. may i suggest u go and contact some artists or other ppl? there's the arts council artists' directory online which u can access.

highest common factor dude.

highest common factor, lowest common denominator, whatever. I have no problems if you need to pander to sell your works, but that doesn't mean that it's an artist fault if you don't quite 'get' his art. I don't think it's anyone's fault really. Anyway it's all subjective since art is art. If you're in it for the passion, then you'll remain around, wherever it may be.

Singapore Arts Scene's Pretty Good

Actually, I think the Singapore arts scene's pretty good...while I think you should definitely try and read up a bit of history of perhaps New York and London's film/ art/ music scenes before drawing a comparison to Singapore, "Art" is also probably a little too broad -- perhaps you should focus on just music or film, or perhaps drama? That way you can make more accurate statements.

Also, I agree with Soft -- the Singapore arts scene's moving so quickly now! Many of the things which are (I believe) important for it to flourish, like increasing public interest, government support, growing acceptance and more importantly, increasing wealth, are present. Singapore is also an intellectual property hub with strong laws protecting copyrights -- such as music and digital mediums -- which have led to companies such as Pixar setting up base in Singapore. Art schools like SOTA and even NTU's fine arts faculties are springing up to churn out new generations of local artists and give them quality, socially respected educations. (Not that the polys haven't been doing a good job. Chen Zheyi, who recently won a Cannes Commendation for "Amah" was from NAP, after completing his O Levels in Chinese High). The new IRs may also give local artists (I'm just speculating) a platform for art as well, as with the IRs will come the need for entertainment, music, events etc.

So, as Soft says -- we ARE moving fast. I think we're living in a pretty exciting time for Singapore in terms of art, especially since the quality of our artists is improving. I'm pretty proud of it -- and believe that we are all proud of it;)

We're doing pretty well in terms of how we are growing. Very much so.

However, I think we can only truly say that we are "There" when the Mass stop saying things like "Omg! You guys sound like Radiohead! I'm a Radiohead fan!" and start saying things like "Omg! You guys sound like Electrico! I'm an Electrico fan!"

.... or when a local band makes news by suing an international p2p software creator for allowing their songs to be fraudulently downloaded by a million people, who could have bought their album and gave them Platinum status instead.

Now that, my friends, will be a proud day for SG.
