has anyone experienced this? with singapore's kinda climate it should be pretty common right?

im scared one day i will wake up and pick up my favourite cd and notice that it has started to rot haha. not that it has happened yet, the ones that usually rot are CDRs.

they sell special disc cleaning liquids at simlim.
mean time use something like nero or anything and "legally backup" disc image those really important discs to your hard drive or something in .nrg

I personally keep only the songs I like in .ape format using www.monkeysaudio.com

its not so much the contents of these CDs, cos i usually rip the music and store them in my computer and ipod anyway, more of the physical thing itself.

sucks to think of it happen one day :(

Music CDs don't seem so bad. It's VCDs that seem to have an 'expiry date'. They just start having disruptive problems after awhile which only get worse. They've even jammed my player sometimes.

i've read on some forums on cds manufactured before a certain year (think its late 90s or early 00s) - they are more prone to disc rot. which makes me worry since cds before that era are the ones that i kinda cherish the most.

Damn.. my Testament CD is from far earlier than the late 1990s. It's from 1989. Thankfully it is still working fine. I've got plenty of CDs from the late 1990s to early 00s though. And some are pretty rare, too...

i believe you're talking about a worry for this.

it's the first time I've heard of details like it, although I have experienced disc rots myself from cheap brandless china made CD-Rs in the past. it suddenly went opaque and the "data" side started peeling like dried blood clot. my last batch of data on "optical storage" are on verbatim DVDs more than 5 years ago. will let you know if they're still functional when I get to them in a few months time, if not, I will dig up this thread. if it still works great, then I'll keep quiet about it.

the disc rot apparently it's a "chemical" thing, cos I personally thought it was like "once I back up my data to DVD & verify/crc check etc, I don't touch them and read them as less as I can to reduce wear and tear" . the experiment is underway , but it's been so long I almost forgot about it until you mentioned haha.

as for rare original cds, I've made cd-r copies and store them in the same case, so I only read the cd-r than to touch/read the original. unless necessary.

ya... only that sometimes even if label offers to replace it wont be the same anymore, esp since first presses can be held in pretty high regards.
