Digital cameras.

I am starting to dislike using the conventional film. At the vai concert , every photo i took came out dark because of the low powered flash. I am currently using a Pentax ESPIO 115G.

Not very good and i want to switch to digi cam. What should i get? I want to take more outdoor far distance photos. Budget maybe $500-$700.
I am currently outta cash but plan to get a digi.

if you wanna take stuff during low light conditions, you'll most probably need a tripod anyway (about 0.5s of shutter speed, and i would think you'll really steady hands). Or you can take them when the stage lights come on . flash issn't that useful unless you have a huge one....or you're really near.... which i think both wouldn't be the case cause i think organisers wouldn't like their performer going blind......

or get a digital camera with Aperture / Shutter priority / Manual (A/S/M) mode so that you can adjust the right parameters for shooting in lowlight condition. Usually a camera like this will have ISO settings like >800 which increases the sensitivity of the CCD detector ( at expense of noise pixels), for you to take photos under low light condition.

Hmm...complex indeed.

what is aperture? I read a review about the C-2500L olypmus and they said it has only a 2 stop aperture.

I saw this cam i like and read a pretty long and good review about the Olympus C-2500L. Kinda big but seems great since i want to take long distance and dark places. But kinda big and can't fir into my pocket.

aperture is the size of the opening that allows light to go into.

i think for most cameras they range from f/2 to f/8 but for other higher range ones goes to f/16.

a larger f-number means the aperture is smaller, so you'll have to open the shutter longer for the same brightness. This also make the background more "focused", like you can see the subject and the background.

with a smaller f-number, the aperture is larger, so you'll open the shutter shorter for the same brightness. this has the effect of the subject being clear, and the background being like out of focus.

something like that....me trying-to-be-amatuer ...

I'm using a olympus C-700UZ.. old model, now its like C-760UZ already. Thinking of upgrading too, but dunno what to buy, I'm more like a like to carry everyday everywhere ard to take photo one,but then would liek to have features too. so size and features = expensive.

the casio exlim (highest range one >$1000) has A/S/M modes and is really small (portable!). but well add a few hundred more can get a digital SLR......!

Hi!

When it comes to low-light photography, a lot of factors affects teh output. The film speed, is vone of the most crucial, but also determines the quality of the picture; teh higher teh speed, teh more grainy your picture is (due to the size of the crystals on the film). And there's, as mentioned, aperture settings, exposure and so on. In situations such as a concert, the exposure/aperture option may not be effective, similar in sports photography. Teh pics will become motion blurred. Low light makes it even more challenging...

If you can afford it, go for a canon or nikon digi cam. Canons are good, resolution-wise. Although the stated resolution is the same as any other cameras, the output is crispier than others of the same range. Nikons are good for close range shots (macros). Some of the mid-high ranges of these brands have full/partial manual functions, which is really handy for night shots...

Check out this review site http://www.dpreview.com. This site is very informative, with in-depth reviews for popular cameras.

Cheers!

Canon powershot, Canon powershot, Canon Powershot. They are not making cameras to make them small, have funny lights, change colour or cook your dinner. They are making Cameras to - gasp - take good pictures. And they do. :!:

Canon Ixus 500. Good all-rounder. I took it to Scotland and took alot of sceneries and stuff like that. The effect turn out is very good.

Ixus 500 is pretty damn expensive. The Ixus series is a designer series..The PowerShots are quite bulky, and not as aesthetically pleasing, but much, much cheaper.

Hi all,

I was a little bit surprised to find a camera discussion here, lol, im a bit of a photography enthusiast myself, im letting go of my Sony f717 - its not as portable as some of the smaller cameras, but it has great features for focusing in dark situations and it has a first class carl zeiss lens. Also with all the manual features you could need. Any parties interested please PM me =). good luck in your search for your camera!

Wah so confusing...so many cameras out there i really don't know what fits me...i want to get a digi cam because my pentax really sucks in dark situations. I felt so disappointed after snapping black photos at steve vai's concert. When theres a wake in the night , the photos turn out black too. So i decicded toget a digi cam because i dislike film too.
