difference between 22 and 24 frets guitar

im curious to find out what is the difference between a 22 frets guitar and a 24 frets guitar. can anyone tell me please?

One has 22 frets while the other has 24? haha. Some people just like having access to an extra two frets so that it completes the 2 full octaves on each string. Having 22 frets doesn't mean your playing is limited as well though. Its just preference.

some people says it affects tones and playability. to me i beg to differ. its just extra 2 frets. u could always do a full bend on the 22 to get the 24th sound.

ahah, it's more like personal preference. if bending at 22nd would get you the 24th note, then 24th would get the 26th, in which you're better off with 27 fret guitars. :D

Actually, it's beyond just fret count and the extra few notes.

Imagine these two scenarios:

IF two necks were to be built with all things similar except number of frets, the extra fret will have to be accommodated into the neck somehow. Hence, the stretching and fretting of notes and chords will definitely be affected. Also, a fret board with closer frets means there is less contact of the string on the wood of the fretboard, hence the tone and feel will definitely be affected. It's like comparing fretting the lower scales and higher scales of your fretboard.

However, IF the neck length differs to accommodate for the added or lack of frets, then the length of slack between the point of contacts between nut/finger and bridge will be affected as well ie longer necks = more slack = more roundness in the tone.

I do have to say that this won't matter squat when you throw in the pickups, pedals, amp eq and amp itself into the equation :p

and another difference is the position of the neck pickup relative to the fraction of length of string. kinda technical but this affects the harmonics the neck pup picks up.

imagine 2 guitars with same 25.5" scale length (nut to saddle). the guitar with 2 more frets would make the neck pickup closer to the bridge than the 22 fret guitar. this physical limitation kinda affects NECK pup tone more than anything else. i think when people mention tone getting affected by 22 / 24 fret guitars, they're mostly refering to the sound of the neck pup.

This has a crazy 29 frets. :O

I don't really get this but yeah, I'm looking to get a 24fret guitar! Still on the look out.

This is the key difference. It's mainly about tone. Playability or not, depends on the guitar's format. But the neck tone for a 22 fretter can NEVER be gotten with a 24 fretter. It's still a matter of preference, but a 22 fretter gives a more open tone than a 24 fretter in the neck pup. It's plain physics...

Number of frets does NOT affect scale length. There are 24 fretted Les Pauls in the market which are still 24.75" scales. Not that difficult to play either...

hmm wouldnt that affect the the ph spots/ harmonics and stuff? especially like the 29 above?

yes, neck pup tone is affected because different neck pup spots pick up different sets of harmonics and leave out different sets of nodes..

you wouldn't be able to produce a strong pinch harmonic when it's pinched above the pickup because that's creating a node right above it. a node is a spot where the string does not move when the rest of it vibrates
