I don't understand the extra fret thing. Why not just get a 7 string, and tune E A D G B E (A), the bracketed A being the high A. You essentially get all those high notes, and more.

its not as easy as it seems... Vai has tried it.. George Lynch has tried it... the problem is, with the 25.5 inch scale, the high A string (using 0.08) breaks too often..., even if you can get 0.07 steel strings, which is feasible, it would be too fragile.

Well, Bbf uses a thimble to hit the high notes beyond the conventional fretboard. The extra frets are used as guidelines.

If you had watched the vid I posted sometime ago (the one at ToneMerchants), Guthrie Govan is an expert in this technique as well.
