a baritone is a guitar with a longer scale, i.e. around 28 and 5/8" long. thats more than fender's standard of 25.5", or gibson's 24 and 3/4".

a varitone = a rotary switch on a guitar with various capacitors attached to it. each "stop" along the switch gives a different tone. more on this at www.has-sound.com

also...

neck-thru construction means the neck is as long as the body, with "wings" of wood (as mentioned earlier) glued to the sides of the neck, to form the body.

set-neck construction is used in les pauls, its simply glueing a neck onto a body.

I think a Varitone makes a much much much more useful tone control. A pity my Ibanez Saber has so little cavity space... I would LOVE to put in one of HAS Sound's top of the line varitones...
