i'm juz plain bored here , so i might as well start up some discussion here....

try asking a typical teenage male pianist where to get the best bargains in town and he'll give u a blur look.try asking a typical teenage male pianist wad is 576 to the power of 43 and he'll give u the answer wif a blink of an eye....

state your view on this...

PS:no offence to all you pianist out there but this is wad i have observed so far...

why can't pianist my age be like rock stars? i've never seen a pianist who smokes and plays probably because the Durian Building forbits smoking in it's premises , i've never seen a pianist gobble down a bottle of Tiger Beer.i've never seen pianist get high on drugs while playing the piano.
don't u think so? anyways i was wondering about this entire concept of a "havoc pianist" last nite and i decided to post this topic up.i wonder how long will i have to wait to see all these radical changes in a pianist? it's like...dammit...almost every teenage male pianist i come across are a bunch of mama's boys.

dammit i feel so left out :(

hi dude, you are not alone ... a bottle of tiger beer (or few shots of vodka) = faster and crazier solo on stage ... trust me (did it few times) ... but no drugs please .. bad for your health

I'm a male pianist but I'm not a teenager - otherwise I'll fall into your category of criticism. But friend, be very careful of your comments. You are generalising all keyboardists. Even if your observation is true, is there anything wrong with being in that category you described? "Bunch of mama's boys" sounds awfully derogatory. We're all musicians of different backgrounds and lifestyle preferences. Last thing I want to see here is musician putting down another musician - or a pianist putting down another pianist. Let's critic music, not the person. But I'm sure you're just vending your frustration and don't really mean to belittle those different to yourself... :)

who cares what image and attitude you project! let the fingers do the talking first.

if mama's boys can whup your ass any day, u'd do well to be humble and learn how to play piano from mama's boys!

.

uh... i think you forgot about jerry lee lewis. he married his 13 yr old cousin!

besides, why associate music with image?

u can say i'm venting my frustration dats why i put the PS in the first post.i know i have a long way to go and maybe i'm just mixing teenage talk wif music which obviously has nothing related to each other.
i knew i would expect harsh criticism from people but i just wanted some of ur opinions dats all.

okay just feel that the piano is being neglected in today's society.i mean...u see electric guitars , drum sets , keyboards , bass in an open stage which u might wanna call it a gig.but i feel dat piano is only confined into concert halls dats all.i'm juz telling straight from my heart , i feel dat no one appreciates piano music especially pple my age.if only the piano could join the keyboard , bass , guitar , drums on stage in a gig i think the people's prospective on the piano might change a bit.it's just dat the youth would rather watch a free gig in public wif musicians going wild on stage instead of paying big bucks to get into a concert hall to enjoy piano music.now as result , only the rich can splurge their money on a piano concerto and wad bout we people of average income? definitely we wun want to pay big bucks to get into a concert hall and enjoy piano music we would rather watch it for free if we so happen to come across one in public.so i guess it's popularity is only restricted into the concert hall whereby only the rich can enjoy and of course we average income people form the largest percentage of people in Singapore.

yes i say this again , i knew dat i would get a lot of harsh criticism from this post and i even think twice b4 i posted it but i was willing to take the risk.although wif all the criticism i get , i knew dat i could at least get ur honest opinion on it.if u find anything offensive about my previous post den i'm truely sorry...

Dude..... I dog piano music..... and totally respect piano players..... You people rock..... Really..... I wanted to play the piano once..... But got no money to learn....... therefore i picked up the drums..... Sorry to see that your really pissed.... and ya if i can add some classical music to my band , music we would the thing is we can't find any one to jam with us on keyboards....... maybe they think rock music is too loud...... :?:

to explain the "mama's boys" part i shall give u some background info about myself.i started playing the piano when i was in sec 4 which means exactly a year ago.before that , i was just like ur average teenager.coming from an all boys school...we like showcase a lot of mischef in school and public.we use to disturb students from other "smarter" schools on the bus , we use to hang out at orchard road or just about any other possible thing u could think of and i almost got into trouble wif the law before.i've smoked , i've drink , i've shoftlifted before(obviously without getting caught).so u can say dat i was a teen wif misguided thoughts at dat time.

the turning point came when this girl screwed my life up when i was in sec 3.and at dat point in time , i started feeling attracted to piano music.it's like the minute i listen to the song "An Jing" on my hi fi set especially the piano intro...i really felt like i wanted to cry like dat.so yeah...finally i got to learn to play the piano after much persuasion to my parents.

it was also at this point in time dat i started to find out the frens i use to hang wif , they started to ignore or rather keep their distance from me because i played the piano.they were more into punk rock music especially Blink 182.i could not convey my thoughts about the piano to anyone either because they dun know wad the hell im toking about or they were juz more interested in guitar knowledge.thank god i managed to find better frens who although are not musicians , i juz felt comfortable being wif them excluding all the mischef i have cause last time.

so this taught of a "rebel pianist" came to my mind.i mean...i was kinda distressed and u can say dat i'm really dat jealous that the guitar and drum sets are enjoying great popularity in today's modern society rather than the piano.i mean u see guitarist high on tobacco and alcohol but why can't pianist be the same? okok enough my crap now...some of u think i'm weird but u probably have to understand my background first before jumping to conclusions dat i'm weird....i hope u understand wad i mean....

sorry man...i appreciate ur words but i guess i have a long long way to go.but dat does not mean i'm not hardworking on my piano. I AM!!!!
actually i find 2 hours a day on the piano is not enough...lolx.but hey thanks for the comments!!!!

wad i'm currently doing now is composing a piano solo.i'm almost done wif it thou but i need to get it recorded first...maybe in 2 weeks time or smth? when i'm really confident of doing a live recording. i hope do get it recorded before valentines day itself thou cause my song sounds kinda depressing(i hope).maybe it could be for all u singles out there who will feel lonely this valentines day

I see where you're coming from. Actually, I don't think having the $ to learn piano is an issue. I know a friend from Indonesia. Trust me, he's got no money to learn piano. But he loved it - and decided to pick it up on his own. Today, he's playing jazz and his fingers techniques are remarkable - even though he cannot read notes! I got another friend - a violinist actually. He took piano on his own - no lessons. He did it because he loved the piano. Today, he plays better than most keyboardists in bands I know.

It all comes to determination and I believe, friend, you have it! So perhaps, you'll be the one to break the "pianist trend" and show the others that pianist do not have to conform to an image! Then maybe more young people like yourself will start to take up the challenge to pick it up.

Actually, I wonder, why do people prefer to pick up guitar on their own rather than the keyboard or piano? The cost of the instruments are about the same nowadays.

DoubleBlade, there is no right or wrong here. It is simply how you want it to be. Piano music? We have one just right among us! Chester Tan. This guys is fantastic! Before I got to know him, I read from his website that he was going to come out with an album with all his original piano music. I thought, "Wow! That's going to be some work."

He got his album out now. http://timeless.chestertan.com/page2.htm

To get people to watch a free gig is already hard enough. Now you want me to get people to watch a free classical piano recital? big challenge man!

actually i really have to thank chester tan for his friendly advice about a month ago.he just told me that when it comes to composing a song , inspiration comes along while ur playing but i taught otherwise i taught dat how can inspiration come along while ur playing when ur fullest attention is focused on the keyboards.well , i kinda followed his advice about inspiration coming along while ur playing and guess wad...from a 40+ second solo it evolved into a 2min 40 sec solo in less than 15 mins? whahahahahah dat's one thing i would never forget about him...the pianist who taught me that inspiration is best when ur playing the piano.

HEY CHESTER IF YOU'RE READING THIS.....A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU!!!! YOU'RE MY SINGAPORE IDOL!!!! FORGET SYLVESTER SIM AND TAUFIK....HERE COME'S CHESTER TAN!!!!

as for the outdoor gig part , yeah i agree it be challenging to set up a outdoor classical concert because of a few factors.

1.Rental of a Grand Piano including the cost of transportation
2.You have to pay violinist , celloist , double bassist etc for their time and effort
3.all these additional cost of expenses exluding the cost of planning , setting up of tentage , logistic etc which should cost you around 8k

yes it's challenging but NOT impossible as compared to a normal gig where everyone brings his own instrument except the drummer and keyboardist.

hmmm....maybe i should submit a proposal to Southeast CDC for a classical music version of Jazzpiration by the Beach one day.imagine listening to classical music by the beach??? hmmm.....sounds romantic!!!!

i wanted to learn piano.. mom won't put me into any class... and theres only a guitar in my house.. so yeah.. DAMMIT!

Yeah I want to learn piano also(Dad force me to learn it as a child but i ended up hating it and i've since forgotten all that i've learned),,IMO i think every musician should at least know some basic piano chords and theory! :D

lol i remember when i WANTED to learn the piano. i learned till i was grade 4, didn't like it and then quit. haha. then picked up the drums and guitar, and now 7 years later i find that i wish i knew how to play the piano well. its all in the mentality man. I respect all musicians no matter what they play or how well they play it. Like in the converse ads " passion is not a crime" lol.

Just keep working hard at it, if your friends shun you if you are playing the piano then they are idiots la. haha. Just my humble opinions

and I would pay to see/hear a good pianist. Just as i would pay to hear a good band. Music is music to me, doesn't matter if its rock or classical.
